Wait, wait, go back. Why did he? Could you answer that please? People already assumed he'd been kidnapped by the Joker's thugs, wouldn't it have been easy to blame them? As opposed to Batman quitting, which looks a lot like the bad guys winning?

The same reason Peter Parker had to tell Mary Jane he couldn't get together with her at the end of Spider Man. Because then villains would come after her, but the only known connection to Spider Man is through you selling his exclusive pictures to the paper and not from dating Mary Jane as opposed to being platonic friends and jesus aren't there any other competing papers in New York city you could go to?
