I have always thought progressive rock was the true alternative music...it draws from classical music instead of blues...overt sexuality is anathema instead of necessary...I could go on and on.

But it ain't everybody's cup of tea.

When it comes down to it, I'm glad it exists and is vibrant because music is an art form and as such the fringes inform the center.
