O Lordy, the trials I suffered as a white male going through higher education. Sure it may have seemed like I breezed through with full scholarships, but really the whole time I knew that my life had been made harder by colleges giving ignorant and lazy students positions in even better schools that I would have otherwise gotten into.

The use of 'white people' tag is usually funny. Sometimes its used in a strange, unfunny way that betrays some weird prejudice in a poster, but usually it is fine.

What _is_ strange about this place is the taboo about joking about _other_ ethnicities, which is where I get disappointed with the userbase. Once you open the door to making jokes about groups of people you aren't allowed to be brittle. I'm not sure where this comes from on poetv: ordinary white guilt, genuine racism? who knows?

More to your point: attitudes, observations and jokes about ethnicities are themselves okay, I think. People get offended when the attitudes match attitudes held by people who have in the past and currently persecute, abuse and marginalize groups of people through legislation or force. Europeans, like any colonial effort did alot of that so white people, any white person is held responsible for those actions: sometimes rightly and sometimes not.

As far as a culture, there is no such thing as white culture.

Go to Europe, take an Irishman and a German guy: they have fuck all to do with each other. As shown in that mockumentary currently on the front page, even white people living in neighboring valleys don't feel part of a larger culture or ethnicity, they are all separate little groups.

In America there is this notion of "being white" because a bunch of Europeans from different countries came over and got to own Africans like cattle. White people exist only as a juxtaposition of taking the black man and other late-coming immigrants and converting them into "the other".

The idiots in this video fool themselves into thinking there is such a thing as a "white race" that they belong to, that somehow all gets along and holds hands and takes long walks on the beach if only were it not for the evil "darkies" trying to destroy the system from within.

In Europe, people don't identify themselves as white, they identify themselves as part of their own different groups that are different from each other (the Flemish, the Germans, the Brits, the Irish, the Italians, and often by sub-groups within those groups). Only once the black man (or other despised ethnicity) comes into the picture will the racists start saying "OH WELL BUT WE ARE WHITE AND HE'S BLACK (or Arab or Jew or whatever)". All of a sudden being white is some kind of community, but it's a racist concept that starts to exist only in the presence of something perceived as "other".
This of course occurs in Europe and in South Africa and elsewhere, but people don't give a shit about being white until some other ethnicity they despise comes into the picture. Thus me not caring if it hurts "white" people's feelings.

Try this thought experiment:

Picture a large number of white families from France moving into the same neighborhood of these self proclaimed members of the "white race".

I have a feeling they would feel only marginally less pissed off than if it were a large number of black families.

The "white people" tag is, I would assume, often added by people who are themselves white but nonetheless don't see themselves as party to the activities in the video in question. So it's not about their actual true beliefs about white people; they're just noting that the video tracks with stereotypes about whites. Same with the "black people" tag.

"White people" is primarily an American concept, where the "default" is a light-skinned person who speaks American English without a recognizably foreign accent. A white Frenchman in the US would probably be noted as a "Frenchman" even though his skin is the same color as, say, mine because his French accent would stand out as a noteworthy characteristic. I could draw Venn diagrams and shit.

It's good to think about this stuff and police one's self for casual bigotry, but bear in mind this is also a place where a certain degree of juvenile expression is encouraged, and mostly people are just fucking around. I don't generally see anything here that looks like sincere bigotry, not even the occasional troll who is trying really hard to be noticed.
