So, anyway. Obama's drone strike program is worse than Bush's torture programs. And the drone strike program happens to civilians without warning. It's pretty sickening that the American liberal zeitgeist doesn't care!

Just wanted to point this out. It's a much more important point than fucking optics and symbolism of a fucking bible.

fatatty - 2013-01-24

The only compelling argument I've heard for a Romney Presidency having a positive effect on the world is the reawakening of the anti-war movement of the left.

Conservatives will always feel warm and fuzzy as the police state slowly envelops them and blows up foreigners, but liberals only feel warm and fuzzy about it as long as a Democrat is doing it.

EvilHomer - 2013-01-24

That's exactly why I wanted Romney to win. Not because he'd make a better President, but because we'd finally see the "liberal" media get back to bitching about Gitmo and non-Congressionally approved wars. When neither party is willing to represent the people's best interests, might as well pick the one that's going to meet the stiffest resistance.

Void 71 - 2013-01-24

They didn't do that under Bush so what makes you think they would do it under Romney? The media is non-partisan when it comes to licking the boots of whoever is in power.

Caminante Nocturno - 2013-01-24

You people are going to die angry and frustrated with nothing to look back on but a lifetime of self-imposed frustration and smug defeatism.

CornOnTheCabre - 2013-01-24

He's got you there, guys. All Cam has to worry about is dying alone.

glasseye - 2013-01-24

Alone? He's got his waifu.

Still waiting for someone to come up with a better option for dealing with current terrorists than drone strikes. Every other active option (bombing campaigns, sanctions, etc) will cause more deaths by pretty huge margins, and the passive options (doing nothing / waiting for Pakistan or whoever to go after them) mean letting terrorists carry out strikes on civilian populations. Yeah, we have a pretty good track record stopping them here in the US, except for that one time; but does that mean we should simply wait for them to make it this far? Or let them hit other countries for that matter?

And yes, I think it makes a difference that we're trying to minimize casualties, in trying to take down guys who consider it a good day's work when they can indiscriminately kill a thousand civilians. Hell, we wouldn't even be going after them if they weren't mass murderers; presumably they could simply find a new job and we wouldn't be targeting them any longer.

What we have here is a situation where every single option is shitty, but I believe drone strikes are the least shitty option. At least the destruction is focused. At least it doesn't ruin infrastructure (sanctions / bombing) or destabilize society (invasion). I have concerns about the quality of our intel and the lack of oversight, but in and of themselves, drone strikes seem to be the least shitty option on the table.

That said, I am genuinely open to better ideas. I am a "fan" of drone strikes only to the extent that every other option appears to be worse, and I would like a better option to appear.

Hooker - 2013-01-28

The only effective difference between the drone strike program and the napalm program is that the drone strike program is probably killing a much higher number of civilians. The fucking alternative to the drone strike program is to not have the fucking drone strike program that is KILLING CIVILIANS AND PUTTING EVERYONE IN THE STRIKE AREAS IN A STATE OF CHRONIC, MORTAL FEAR. You shit. The fucking ends do not justify the fucking means.

EvilHomer - 2013-01-24

I'd just like to apologize up front for the obnoxious MOXNEWS watermarks. It was either this, or Young Turks.

Old_Zircon - 2013-01-24

Can' find much to disagree with.

baleen - 2013-01-24

I'd pay American to know what Newt was thinking about right there.

Urkel Forever - 2013-01-24

That he has finally find an equally annoying windbag?

wackyakmed - 2013-01-24

You can watch the entire broadcast of the poverty roundtable this is from here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fIpHmocynjQ . Newt's overall mindset seemed to be, "I am so wonderful for being on stage with these colored folks, and thinking about the poor! These magical negroes are inspiring me to have even more amazing ideas!!!" He did come across as open-minded at least, which is better than most of the Washington elite.

West has one more mini-sermon about what it means to challenge power later in the broadcast that hasn't made waves like this one, but I think is much more important for people to see.

Jet Bin Fever - 2013-01-24

I got to see him at an event just a few days ago. He's a really fun and funny guy to listen to. I'm glad he's out there doing his thing.

fatatty - 2013-01-24

Yeah, he has one of the better shows on NPR as well.

fatatty - 2013-01-24

Actually I'm thinking of Travis Smiley, but he's on so much he's basically a co-host.

Jet Bin Fever - 2013-01-24

They were both there actually. Tavis seemed really tired though, since they were in the midst of a giant talking tour for their afuturewithoutpoverty.com campaign.

cognitivedissonance - 2013-01-25

I sent him a fan letter once telling him that I wish I was black so I could emulate his hair style.

I can never hear the word 'tradition' and not think of G.K. Chesterton:

"Tradition means giving a vote to most obscure of all classes, our ancestors. It is the democracy of the dead.”
...
“Tradition refuses to submit to the small and arrogant oligarchy of those who merely happen to be walking about. All democrats object to men being disqualified by the accident of birth; tradition objects to their being disqualified by the accident of death. Democracy tells us not to neglect a good man’s opinion, even if he is our groom; tradition asks us not to neglect a good man’s opinion, even if he is our father.”

TeenerTot - 2013-01-25

I can never hear the word "tradition" and not think of Tevye:

"Who, day and night, must scramble for a living,
Feed a wife and children, say his daily prayers?
And who has the right, as master of the house,
To have the final word at home?

The Papa, the Papa! Tradition.
The Papa, the Papa! Tradition."

Old_Zircon - 2013-01-25

I can't hear that Tevye quote without thinking of the baby from Dinosaurs saying it.

memedumpster - 2013-01-25

With a fierceness.

TeenerTot - 2013-01-25

I can see his point. I would have preferred he not use a bible at all, of course.

memedumpster - 2013-01-25

I would have preferred he take the oath on the decapitated head of his opponent.
