They haven't TECHNICALLY disabled comments, but they might as well have.
Anyway, religious people always miss the real point of the Book of Job. If you ask them, the "moral" of the story is that you must still love and worship God even if shitty things happen to you.
They always skip over the part where Job's friends see him suffering and are all, "Wow, you must have really pissed God off for him to do this to you," and Job is all, "I haven't done anything wrong!" but they're, like, "you must have!" and he's saying, "I haven't been bad, I swear!" and they say, "but you obviously deserve this or God wouldn't have done it," so Job says "I don't know why God's doing this to me!"
At which point God shows up (for fun imagine him appearing in the form of Jules Winnfield) and says:
"Was it you who laid the foundation of the earth? Was it you who determined its measure? Was it you who bound the sea to the shore and said 'you may come this far and no further'? Is it you who commands the sun to rise?"
Basically asking all present who the fuck they think they are to question his motives and actions.
So the real point of the story of Job is not to shoot your mouth off telling other people why God allows bad things to happen, but this is lost on the holly-rollers.

SteamPoweredKleenex  - 2013-02-03 I never liked God's answer, because it sounds like a petulant douche who's been caught out at being a douche and starts tossing up a bunch of irrelevant garbage to justify it.
If your dad made a bet that the ten-year-old you wouldn't call him an asshole if he took away your toys, your clothes, made you sleep in the back yard, and had you bathe in sewage every morning, it doesn't really matter that you're a minor in his custody, he's being a douche.
Why didn't this alleged God, who's supposed to be the source of things like "truth" own up to the fact that Job was being fucked over because God had made a wager with Satan?
Really, the point of Job is to make sure the people shut up and don't ask annoying questions that might lead to thoughts like "maybe the priests are just making this crap up to run things," "maybe all these rituals we do aren't actually making the rain come or keeping people from pillaging our towns," and "maybe this 'God' thing is a fairy tale and we should start figuring out how things really work."

Binro the Heretic - 2013-02-03 I'm not disputing that God, as portrayed in the bible, is a total prick. I'm an atheist so I don't believe everything happens because of some grand plan by some all-powerful being.
I just think if people are going to use the Bible as a moral guide, they should at least glean the right lessons.
We don't have natural disasters because we aren't persecuting homosexuals hard enough. Children aren't shot dead by crazy people because we took prayer out of schools. These things happen because of circumstances, not because God is sending a message.
