Steven Spielberg wishes "A.I." had come out this dark and poignant.

All the best stories begin with a kid dying.

The baby is on the floor, kicking it's feet, crying out reflexively in hopes of changing the minds of adults.

I don't get it. Do you disagree?

The GBA Astroboy game was pretty awesome (I think it was called "omega factor"). It was only after that I realized the obvious inspiration of astroboy on megaman.

It is neat to see how the various robots have changed throughout the different incarnations...

Omega Factor was one of the best GBA games of all. Sadly, it sold about 12 copies in this country.

Of all the submissions I ever submitted, I accidentally voted THIS down??? Probably when I was trying to submit the second page, which I think I may have also botched. Thankfully, justice triumphed in the end.

When I was five years old, I had two favorite shows, ASTROBOY and SUPERCAR. Only one of those is so much better than I remember it.

The traditional Christian view of man's relationship with his creator.

... by which I mean, if you displease your Maker, you will be cast aside and forced to live with an Italian.

God, I love Astro Boy. It's just so much more intelligent than it appears to be. It has this surface of childish adventure taking place in a sci-fi candyland to it, but underneath that are some incredibly dark and complex themes for a children's comic. Racism, death, religion, the ethics of civil disobedience, the limits of democracy, even the Vietnam war are examined, and no easy answers are given.

But what's amazing is that you can read or watch it as a kid, completely miss all of that, and still enjoy it completely. Tezuka was one of the greatest cartoonists ever when it came to crafting stories that worked on multiple levels.

There's a story where Astro goes to the future, where he accidentally goes to an "amusement center" where people pay to go into a simulated environment, like the wild west or ancient Japan, and are given lethal weapons to hunt each other with. The object is for players to kill each other until there's only one left standing. There is no prize, yet the centers are incredibly popular. No one complains because everyone is there voluntarily. A character tells Astro that since these games were introduced, violent crime rates have plummeted. As a kid, I read that story as "Astro Boy's adventure in the VR old west town full of psychos," but now I look at it and it's Tezuka asking whether we're capable of ever outgrowing our tendency for violence. Amazing stuff.
