John Holmes Motherfucker - 2013-02-07
Back then, she was a little slice of heaven. Come to think of it, so was he, at least until he got mean.
I should mention that David Birney has denied that he was physically abusive to Meredith Baxter when they were married , and while I seem to enjoy bringing it up, I don't pretend to know what actually happened.
In wikipedia, I read that this was canceled because the interfaith marriage was controversial. It makes the show seem ahead it its time, but what i remember from my newsweek subscription was that there were a lot of offensive stereotypes and biased assumptions. The Jewish boy marries the Shiksa, and cheerfully starts eating ham and eggs and shellfish without stopping to think about it. I know we're all critical of religion here, and the behavior seems just rational, but it's not an honest portrayal of an interfaith marriage, and Jewish peiople were right to be offended by it. The conflict was mostly with the meddling in-laws. The Jewish family, of course, was the funny one. And it probably didn't help that the actor who played the Jewish boy was actually a protestant.
And it wasn't very good, though it was a hit. Of course, it was scheduled between "All in the Family" and "The Mary Tyler Moore Show, at a time when most people had to get up to change the channel.
