I couldn't find Chian-King black vinegar, which is what all the recipes say to use. I used a mix of balsamic and rice vinegar and water, which apparently has a similar taste and texture.

I can't really explain how this tastes, except that you feel high afterwards and you want to keep eating it.

BillLumbergh - 2013-02-11

I went into this video thinking it was actually made by baleen. One of those mini WTF moments.

baleen - 2013-02-11

I kinda want to get back into making videos. It's been a while.

The Mothership - 2013-02-12

totally, I was all like that isn't baleens voice.

Jet Bin Fever - 2013-02-12

I think baleen should have his own POE-cooking show. Or his own POE-anything show.

Jet Bin Fever - 2013-02-11

Goddamn do I ever hate pig feet. Sorry baleen. The texture is just completely terrible. It isn't that they're feet either. Chicken feet aren't even as bad.
The only thing I hate more from China (that I've actually eaten) are those -awful-, smelly duck/quail eggs that are black. Let me google real quick to see what they're called. Okay... they're called "pidan," or century eggs. Absolutely TERRIBLE terrible things. Makes me want to vomit just thinking of them.

il fiore bel - 2013-02-11

Are those the same eggs they make little boys piss on?

crfog - 2013-02-11

I had never heard of century eggs before, though I've watched videos on other cultures "preserved" (read rotting) food. I'll see if I can dig up some of the videos I saw about the Nordic foods. I love food/cooking and am willing to try almost anything once, but I think I draw the line at items which are rotted.

baleen - 2013-02-11

I ate Filipino "balut" while over there, the national snack of that country, and I can only imagine that it's just as awful as pidan.

I had big time reservations about eating pig feet, which I'd never eaten before. After the marrow, fat, gelatin and meat comes off the bone, it's actually pretty damn good. After braising "inferior cuts" of meat into mind blowingly delicious meals I've been more open about trying all the offal and neglected bits. This is just one of those weird foods that I am glad that I tried.

Jet Bin Fever - 2013-02-12

Maybe mine weren't prepared properly then. They tasted tough and stringy but at the same time really fat and soft. The skin wasn't so bad, it was more the gooey bits underneath. Not much meat, mostly connective tissue.

crfog - 2013-02-11

Forgot my stars the first time. I found the video I had watched before, but decided videos of teens vomiting from eating the stuff is probably something people can find themselves if interested. Instead, there's an informative segment from QI on the delicacy - Surstromming.

I'm all for offal. I have no problem eating meat, but do not like seeing people waste it. I grew up in a family that hunts and farms, so I think I have a better appreciation for animals and the amount of waste in our industrialized food system than the average person. It wasn't until we started mass producing our food that waste became acceptable.

Binro the Heretic - 2013-02-11

My parents and sister love pickled pig feet. They also eat tripe, souse and oysters. They think I'm crazy for not even wanting to try them.

The reason our forbears ate shit like that is because it was that or starvation.

glasseye - 2013-02-12

You are crazy. Try it. If you don't like it, fine, but avoiding delicious food because you have irrational squeamishness is just silly.

Binro the Heretic - 2013-02-12

All those things smell and look awful. We evolved these senses for good reason.

glasseye - 2013-02-14

Nope, you're just afraid.

The Mothership - 2013-02-12

a shitload of salt, sugar and vinegar. I...... would eat this. once.

baleen - 2013-02-12

In fairness, it's a confinement soup meant for women who have just had babies. Makes more sense under that light. I doubt I'll ever scramble out to make this again, but since I'm coming down with a cold it's been just what I need.

chumbucket - 2013-02-12

Doesnt look bad might give this one a try.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2013-02-12

Hey, baleen, do you have any good recipes for haggis?

baleen - 2013-02-14

I'd love to make haggis, but I believe it is illegal to sell lungs as food in the United States. I might be wrong, that's just what my Scottish lass tells me.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2013-02-14

I'm sure they ground up into cold cuts all the time.

zompus - 2013-02-12

My dad insisted on making and distributing this when my kid was born. I think he is the only one who likes this.

jfcaron_ca - 2021-10-09

We just had a kid and several Chinese relatives and friends are making this and bringing us some. I like it quite a bit.
