They'll probably have an episode soon where "the guys" get mad about a nerd sitcom. At least, they would if their writing staff didn't consist of a soccer mom, an 11 year old redditor, and the Official Star Trek Encyclopedia.

That episode would completely redeem the series, actually. I need to send Mr. Lorre a telegraph!

I'd rather have BBT be written by the soccer mom and Redditor. BBT writers remind me of Bobby Bittman tailoring his jokes to them basement-dwelling liberry lovers.

One of my college roommates writes for this show. I ran into him again a few years ago. He couldn't really hide the embarrassment. But these were the kind of jokes he made back then, so I don't know how he has the self-awareness to be embarrassed.

TBBT is also a "would", meaning I would watch it if nothing else is on. Of course, in first run network prime time, something else is most definitely on, but it's on five times a day now, locally and on TBS, an I'll put this on in a TV scheduling emergency. I can understand hating Big Bang for kicking Community's ass in the rating, but it's a traditional sitcom (21st century vaudeville) that's strong on traditional sitcom fundamentals. It has funny jokes. I watch it and occasionaly make haha noises.

Some nerds actually like this show because it portrays them the way they see themselves, just a bunch of light-hearted goofy goofs, a more realistic portrayal of a bunch of unhygenic manchildren and their wearying forced eccentricites and fucked up value systems wouldn't probably make for good sitcom fodder though...

Yeah, trivializing blackface is pretty fucking gross.

But see, that's the thing. All sitcoms feature deeply broken people behaving in wacky ways. Even the "non-nerd" characters on TBBT are screwed up in the head.

To say the show is mocking nerds is sort of missing the point.

But, yeah, nerd mockery or no, comparing this to blackface is bullshit.

In my opinion, this show does a pretty good job of making nerd culture accessible to a mass audience... so, of course, that's going to enrage some people. If nerd culture is accessible to a mass audience, what is the point? Where is the unique identity?

In order to be less offensive it is now referred to as nerd rape.

IT Crowd does it much better by actually building up jokes through an entire episode and by putting its characters through improbable but hilarious scenarios that escalate as the episode progresses.
Big Bang just follows the tired scheme of having some banal dilemma at the start of each episode and then characters say stupid stiff and someone else replies with sarcasm.

I just watched an episode of The Big Bang Theory and that show gave me a Nerd Abortion.

I don't agree with that, and I don't agree with Adham Nu'man, either. I believe that there are plenty of jokes that are, in fact, inventive and jokelike in their construction and execution, but the characters don't much impress me, with the weird exception of Penny and Sheldon, when they're together. They're the two most dissimilar characters, and they've got a nice nonsexual chemistry.

I do agree with Adham Nu'man that The IT Crowd is a much better show, and MY GOD those grotesque Jewish mother jokes are like some kind of unholy throwback to the fifties.

Unholy throwback is every show with a laughtrack.

I'm trying to remember how long it's been since every comedy HAD to have a laughtrack. It wasn't that long ago. I remember seeing a documentary about the making of MASH where everyone involved complained about the laugh track. A laugh track on MASH was ridiculous, and everyone knew it. They would keep it turned down low, but it was required. I think that the first sitcom without a laugh track may have been Malcolm in the Middle.

I think that Sitcoms with Laughtracks and sitcoms without laughtracks should be called different things. Comedies that still use laugh tracks have a completely different style of comedy based on a tradition of the stage. It's "low" comedy based on stuff like minstrel shows and vaudeville. I can't blame anyone for hating it, but it is an art form. And the laugh track may have a place in certain shows of creating an illusion of the live theater. But Two and a Half Men ( a much darker and smarter comedy than TBBT, IMO) ought to be considered a different genre than Community and The Office.

You know, I can't usually stand to watch it, because everyone but the tough-talking housekeeper is so loathsome, but I've come to admire Two and a Half Men, at least in the Charlie Sheen days, for its unsentimental look at a deeply fucked-up family. With the emotionality distant mother and the two sons desperately unable to form relationships with women (issues that are similar but opposite) this is some cold-blooded shit.

Two and Half Men was/is really lame shit. The only thing that made it worthwhile was that we got the Charlie Sheen drug-induced meltdown in the end.

I'm deeply saddened that anyone on here likes this show enough to even half-heartedly defend it, especially the inimitable JHM.

JHMF: Parker Lewis Can't Lose was also sans laughtrack, and was in a lot of ways the prototype for Malcolm in the Middle. (Although holy shit is it hard to watch now).

Did you know that Star Trek was originally going to have a laugh track? The studio execs at the time thought that nobody would get the dry humor without it being pointed out. That would have been bizarre.
