This show was made by dedicated tank nerds, and it shows.

Also, it's great.

At first I thought they were doing better with russian than most japanese voice actors do with english, but then I couldnt understand the last 4/5ths of it. Russian heavy letter 'r' pronounciation doesnt mix well with Japanese ambigious r/l structure.

This show sucks if only because of the forced use of german as every other god damn word in the english subtitles when the charecters never use a single german word aside from the names and titles of some things. Then there's the schoolgirl/war fetish ick factor, and probably other crap, I couldnt get past the first episode.

I think now I understand what people who hate anime are on about.

Craptabulous - 2013-03-09

I know, right?

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2013-03-10

There's also one that has to do with schoolgirls that are actually guns. They fantasize about what kind of man will hold them and the orgasmic experience of being fired (or to put it the way it's drawn, "discharged").

I hate that I know about this, but I saw all of these images on Tumblr going by of anime girls looking like they were being fingered interspersed with guns going off, and I wondered if someone was making some weird fetish about school shootings. I think the truth was somehow worse.

Vaidency - 2013-03-09

Why isn't there an actual Katyusha in the video? Did they think a ten-year-old girl driving a truck would just look too silly?

Old People - 2013-03-09

This sort of thing is stupid.

BHWW - 2013-03-09

Seriously, tho what is the deal with all of these animes and mangas that prominently feature young girls and perhaps older schoolgirls handling weapons and military hardware. I mean, who are the ad wizards who came up with this one?

SolRo - 2013-03-09

I think they got bored with tentacle rape anime and manga.

Ranma X. - 2013-03-10

It's the Japanese right-wing conservative/internet troll's ultimate sexual fantasy.

Kabbage - 2013-03-10

It's pretty weird, yeah. Going off the wiki, it's based on a manga. I'd guess that the artist was good at drawing tanks and generic schoolgirls, so he made a comic about those two things.

I watched the first episode in the misguided hope that it might actually be an ironic war show, wherein students are trained to be tank commanders in school, then sent to slaughter people on the front lines, their ranks bubbly and oblivious to the reality of what they do.

Alas, it is as generic a gimmick show as you could possibly imagine. I blame tumblr for making it look like it might be kind of fun.

Kabbage - 2013-03-10

But to answer BHWW, these weird military/school mashups are just the result of the original artist wanting to draw the those two things in one series. Story, characters, and setting are a complete afterthought.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2013-03-10

Which sounds like a lot of anime (and to a degree, many movies/comics of all stripes, but the anime industry makes a shitload more) where someone designs what they think is a really cool-looking character, has them fight stuff, and then has no idea what kind of story should go with them until it's far too late to fix what's already gone off the rails.

Kabbage - 2013-03-10

It explains a lot about why anime tends to be so embarrassingly bad a lot of the time. Shows are almost always based in a manga series, which are always written and illustrated by one person. It's rare you get someone who's a good enough artist to pen an entire manga AND know how to put together a halfway decent narrative.

The design and the feel of the world tends to be, by far, manga's strong suit. Artists are great at creating THINGS, with a process that limits nothing, so you see imagination in design and atmosphere you rarely see survive any group effort. My favorite manga artist, Hajime Ueda, does gorgeous, expressive artwork bursting with charm and creativity, but he just cannot tell a coherent story to save his life.

Every now and then, they strike gold, like with Hiromu Arakawa's Full Metal Alchemist, which is a series you would never see outside of Japan. It's incredibly impressive that one woman made that series herself. But that kind of thing is very rare. And of course, you get issues there where a studio adapts a successful manga into an anime, then catches up to the ongoing manga, and has to make up their own last half (like the first FMA and Hellsing series). This is always a disaster, but by that point, they've made enough money to justify doing it again.

Anime studios like Gainax have pretty high quality output, and that's because they have writers and animators, separately. That kind of thing costs money, though.

SolRo - 2013-03-10

I've recently noticed that anime based on a novel or light novels are generaly better than average, or amazing if paired with the right studio and artists, which would make sense since novels have to sell on the strength of their story alone.

memedumpster - 2013-03-10

I appreciated how the Trigun anime took out a whole bunch of extra stuff from the Manga in favor of the solid core story. I'm not into anime, though (I like Trigun a fuckload and a handful of others very much), so there's probably better examples of anime studios polishing up a clunky manga.

This is why anime people generally don't let me play their reindeeru gamusu.

SolRo - 2013-03-10

Just wear the schoolgirl costume and you can play.

FABIO - 2013-03-10

Panzer IIs in service on the Soviet front by the time IS-2s came out? HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO BELIEVE THIS?

TimidAres - 2013-03-10

Out if all the things to complain about in this video, I too, noticed this.

Sanest Man Alive - 2013-03-10

I was hoping some loving tank nerd would show up to point this out. I only had intuition to go on, but I just knew that someone else knew those machines were misplaced somehow.

Also, Gunsmith Cats did "underage girls exploding things" much better.

EvilHomer - 2013-03-10

Syrian military week is getting pretty bizarre.

lordyam - 2013-03-10

five stars for my new favorite version of this song, minus 2 stars for the whole of this show. im happy youtube has the tank fights with the stupid edited out.

lordyam - 2013-03-10

side note: this reminds of the last samurai. how do you take a movie about the changing culture of japan by outsiders (mostly by the British, the Netherlands, and the french and ruin it? i mean isnt Enomoto Takeaki a national hero over there (his life would make a great movie) anyway, you fucking put tom cruise in it and make it about how the western american is going save these savages from themselves. thats just fucking stupid.
so how do you take the drama of living and fighting and tanks warfare and ruin it, by putting stupid all over it.
