A visual feast but probably lost by most due to it's absolutely crawling pace.

It's the kind of movie that makes most people hate the arthouse genre, but if you have the patience you might wind up loving it like I do. But I don't blame anyone who doesn't. It's a hard movie to sit through.

Also, you you are going to have Tarkovsky linked, you should add a "water fetish' tag as well. Watch two or more of his movies and you'll see what I mean.

Stalker is amazing and anyone who doesn't like it is a Philistine. A PHILISTINE.

Aelric - 2013-03-11

I agree. I just know that Tarkovsky also puts 9 out of 10 people to sleep. 9 out of 10 people are philistines anyways.

I've seen Stalker in a theater setting twice and not a single person nodded off or left. I think the key with Tarkovsky is that his films are engaging without being boring. "Mirror" is the only one of his movies I felt was maybe pushing that barrier, and oddly enough it's probably his shortest movie. I will agree that you have to be in a certain mood to watch Stalker, it's not something you casually pop-in, but I've always found his movies to be meditative rather than aggressively artistic to the point of pretentiousness.

I tried to watch Solaris once and fell asleep, i do find humours that Tarkovsky once went to see Lucio Fulci's Zombi, goes without saying that he didn't like it.

This is amazingly good quality for YT (and there's good subtitles if you turn on captioning)
Yeah,, this movie is fucking amazing. It's Tarkovsky, so yes, it's slow moving, but every moment, every frame has been so obsessively composed that I don't know how this man lived inside his own head.

I stole this movie from the Public Library where I used to live.

Always wanted to see this, just haven't found the right day for it.

Legend has it, several of the core locations in the film were shot at an abandoned chemical plant. Soon after, many members of the crew grew ill and died, from exposure to residual toxins:

"We were shooting near Tallinn in the area around the small river Jägala with a half-functioning hydroelectric station. Up the river was a chemical plant and it poured out poisonous liquids downstream. There is even this shot in Stalker: snow falling in the summer and white foam floating down the river. In fact it was some horrible poison. Many women in our crew got allergic reactions on their faces. Tarkovsky died from cancer of the right bronchial tube. And Tolya Solonitsyn too. That it was all connected to the location shooting for Stalker became clear to me when Larisa Tarkovskaya died from the same illness in Paris."
