I've had this nightmarish thought that computers and computer-like devices are trending towards smaller and more portable things so we won't mind it when most people are living in places so small you'd assume "Telephone" was was written on the top.

...and those will be the lucky ones.

Old_Zircon - 2013-03-20

Not me, I need tens of thousands of cubic feet of air just to make a snare drum sound good. Not that I have that, but I certainly mind not having it.

Old_Zircon - 2013-03-20

Personally I think it'll only take another decade or two before the general public realizes how badly they've been duped, rounds up the people who really believe this stuff is both practical and good for human kind, set them on fire and throw them in the ocean.

And the 50s/60s visionaries predicted we would all be living in luxury free of work thanks to automation and wealth redistribution from the highest marginal tax rate.

Hooker - 2013-03-20

So we're just posting corporate ads now?

Aelric - 2013-03-20

You do get the point is that this ad is terrifying, right?

James Woods - 2013-03-20

Have you forgotten what the E stands for, old buddy?

Hooker - 2013-03-20

Ehhhh. This is just a bunch of bullshit he's spouting to make Cisco look cutting edge. Every company does this.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2013-03-20

Not getting the logic here. Every company does this, ERGO, there's nothing to it?

Here's Microsoft's vision from 2011

http://youtu.be/a6cNdhOKwi0

Of course, since this is Microsoft, all the software that connects everything to everything else is closed source. Everything that you touch will be sending information. No one really knows what's in it or what it does, except Microsoft, holder of the secret code that runs civilization. This is obviously a vast amount of political power in the hands of whoever controls the code fifty years from now. It won't be Steve Ballmer. Maybe it'll be the Chinese, or the Saudi Royal family. Whoever can afford to buy the most stock.

Or maybe it will be Google. At least they use open source software. Don't they?

Maybe it will turn out all right. But now is the time to consider worst case scenarios. I don't pretend to to understand all the repercussions, but I'm not sure that anyone does.

If they can do it, they're going to do it. This must have been the endgame all along. They're going to try to link everything to the internet. Your refrigerator, your TV, your car, your sunglasses, your microwave oven, your pets, your grandchildren.

I'm not saying that it shouldn't happen, but it seems to me that it had better be open source. It had better be regulated and monitored.

"Have you ever launched a weapon of mass destruction at someone you really hated... from your living room? You will. And the company that'll bring that to you? AT&T."

chumbucket - 2013-03-20

Hate to say it but this insanity is keeping me employed.

James Woods - 2013-03-20

So it goes.

Old_Zircon - 2013-03-21

I got laid off from my bullshit tech job last year an now I edit audiobooks and can finally complain about this stuff without hypocrisy.

memedumpster - 2013-03-21

I hope that means you're a Chinese hacker, otherwise you have no dignity and are destined for a lot of sobbing regret on your deathbed.

Oh no, increased efficiencies!

Nikon - 2013-03-21

This sounds a bit too much like SOP (Sons of the Patriots).
