simon666 - 2013-04-01 Shane Smith's docs are good, but Smith's insinuation that the Times is out of touch with what's 'really' going on in Liberia is boneheaded. To be fair, I think Smith wasn't totally thinking through his position and given time to reflect, he would have acknowledged the legitimacy of Times reporting on Liberia. However, I think what is telling from Smith's comments is that he presupposes VICE gets the 'real story' ipso facto by not being a mainstream institutional brand. Carr corrects Smith's assumption in a straightforward, confident way, which is interesting to see in itself. Smith backs away from his insinuation, saying he is not a journalist to which Carr responds, "Clearly." It's an interesting dynamic to watch the 'out of touch' journalist subordinate the 'in touch' VICE CEO so quickly.

Maru - 2013-04-02 It's that frat boy/jock instinct that responds immediately to male authority.

Something tells me David Carr's typing style hasn't changed since the typewriter age.

Chocolate Jesus - 2013-04-01
I don't care what this is - Fuck Vice.
|
|
Chocolate Jesus - 2013-04-03 Vice is media for those without a point of view, or the ability to cultivate one.
It's glib and superficial like the frat boys who create / consume it.

I used to work for those fucks.
It was the worst job I've ever had, and I've cleaned camp showers in Texas in the middle of Summer.
|
kingarthur - 2013-04-01 Their masturbatory ode to libertarian-ism a while back would lead me to believe Vice would be a terrible employer.
|
kingarthur - 2013-04-01 That said establishment journalists are usually just as guilty.
|
baleen - 2013-04-01 Are you kidding? Being a lower rung at the NYT is slave labor and you're treated like shit. It's called working as a nobody in New York.

Paracelsus - 2013-04-01
And never the twain shall meet. I don't care for VICE that much, but they have every right to piss all over established journalism any time they want. So does everyone else. Grow up, Carr.
|
snothouse - 2013-04-01 I think Carr's point was more one of Smith's "I AM THE TRUE VOICE OF THE PEOPLE" soapbox.

This is the wolf-man vs Dracula. Ain't no good guys here, just two monsters fighting it out to see who gets to terrorized the Transylvanian hamlet.

Any business that holds meetings in a live room with no acoustic dampening is Mickey Mouse and should not be taken seriously. I know that seems like a downright random judge of the business, but it's amazing how little things like that indicate a system wide incompetence.
|
MissLadyArtemis - 2014-03-29 Agreed. It's the important little details which add up to major impressions of neglect and/or incompetence. Would you eat at a restaurant with unclean bathrooms? (I hope not)
