My memories of this mini-series is that he is a psychotic that enjoys impaling people alive...and he enjoys slaughtering his era's equivalent to LARPers, who are just trying to enjoy some fake war.
I don't remember getting to a point in the narrative where he was a redeemable person (it has been 20+ years though). Maybe I should just read the wiki.
