Thou shalt have no other God before me.

Most videos like this have a distinct point where it becomes crazy. This guy seems to suddenly phase in and out of crazyness.

EvilHomer - 2013-04-07

Yeah, yeah, the "Biblical" comment. Whatever; Hayek is well worth a Mass.

Maru - 2013-04-07

You mean like a black mass?

Blue - 2013-04-07

How in the fuck is Christianity about personal responsibility? The whole fucking point is you make someone else suffer for the things you've done wrong.

Bort - 2013-04-07

... and as a good Christian, you can lessen the amount of suffering that Christ endured by not sinning. But maybe that's a Catholic thing.

There are plenty of takes on Christianity where it is about becoming more Christ-like, not acquiring a get-out-of-Hell-free card by public displays of religious devotion. In fact, I could have sworn Christ was foursquare against that sort of thing; that's why he didn't get along with the Pharisees.

IrishWhiskey - 2013-04-07

So it's like Jesus is the hostage being tortured by God when I don't do what he wants. But when I'm forgiven and go to heaven, did that pain never happen, or do I just not suffer consequences for hurting Jesus? Because neither sounds like personal responsibility.

Nah, I'm kidding. I just think the phrase "Christ-like" is vastly overused. The number of people more impressive in their personal deeds and morality than Jesus is too high to count. Whether you assume a historical Jesus, for whom 'love one another' was hardly a brand new message, or the mythical one for whom his main deed is sparing us from his own unjust wrath, by causing more needless suffering.

Bort - 2013-04-08

Even if "Christ-like" isn't the pinnacle of decency, it would be a heck of a lot better than what American Christianity in particular shoots for.

I tell ya whut: even if Satan existed he couldn't have done a better job of poisoning American Christianity than American Christians have done. Not that there has ever been a Golden Age of Christianity in which Christly virtues have been practiced consistently, but I say American Christians have set the gold standard for Not Getting It. When red-state Christianity is understood from top to bottom to mean hating the poor, we've entered into an misunderstanding of Christianity that would have eluded even our most ignorant ancestors. Go back to, say, Medieval Europe and people understood that feeding the poor was the right thing to do, even if the wealthy didn't practice it much. These days ... ? You're just enabling the lazy.

The good news (for modern man, har har) is that there is a strong reaction against this bullshit, from about Generation X onward. Young people would be rather washing feet than hating gays, and this is officially considered a crisis in evangelical circles. Beyond the panic-inducing demographics is probably the slow realization that they are despised not for their righteousness, but for being on the wrong side of basic decency. If people despise you for your righteousness, you're just going through what Jesus did, on a smaller scale. But if people despise you for being an asshole, well, what's your psychological defense against that?

This man will die soon, his utopian dream never realized.

His jaw looks like the jaw of a ventriloquist dummy.

memedumpster - 2013-04-07

Offers four things.

1. Fairy tale desert fascism.
2. Fairy tale desert fascism propaganda.
3. ... wtf!?
4. Straight up lie.

Vaidency - 2013-04-07

"The biblical principle of self-government" really made me laugh too.

"This book, which rarely goes a full paragraph without an appeal to authority or instruction to pledge loyalty to a king, lord or master, is all about how important it is to be free and independent!"

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2013-04-07

They'll argue it's submission to a god, which is totally different than submission to a human authority.

The translation is: "If god tells me fouling the planet and making shitloads of money at the expense of others is a-ok, then praise Jesus and get me more hookers and blow, which God must be willing me to partake of or they wouldn't be available."

This requires ignoring all the "render unto Caesar" stuff, but ignoring their own text is what the religious seem best at.

Prickly Pete - 2013-04-08

Good band name.

cognitivedissonance - 2013-04-08

Yeah, I'd like to see them open for the Cornell West Project.
