Neat. I always thought the time-stretched explosion sounds of Trinity & Beyond didn't make physical sense. Its a brief sonic boom followed shortly by wind noise.

Turns out that (contrary to no-threshold linear model) slight irradiation seems to reduce cancer & mortality risk. Radiation hormesis is a pretty fascinating subject:

Tell that to the people of St. George Utah

Why were airline pilots, who receive a higher than normal dose of radiation over their careers (protracted) in predictable scheduled doses called flight schedules (fractionation) excluded? This would seem like a godsend for the study, as new pilots could be beneath the "hormetic zone" and can be tracked through it and out the other side if they get that far. Other studies have suggested that malignant melanomas are higher in airline pilots. Unfortunately, because this study doesn't include melanoma (or rather, it doesn't name drop melanoma outside the group "all cancers" as it does other forms which support the findings), or airline pilots, they can't be compared.

Five for the sound, that was way better than the fake sounds often used.

I'm not discounting the suffering of those in the immediate fallout zones, nor am I saying I'd build a house at Guarapari Beach, Brazil (790 mSv/y) or Ramsar, Iran (700 mSv/y).

Just that the literature on much smaller doses is fairly surprising (to someone who took the no-threshold linear model as obviously true).

That's going on my metal album.

It's a real shame human civilization wasn't destroyed by a nuclear war back when it was still fashionable to do so. On the other hand, I've got a real good feeling about Iran and North Korea.
