Since we no longer have the POEN forums, I just wanted to get some discussion going on this if there was anyone out there playing it. I've been playing it for about a week on 360 and have been having a lot of fun with it. It isn't perfect, but I don't get the massively negative reactions it's getting from most places. It's a fun, nicely paced action game whose MMO component is a nice add-on but doesn't really bog down the game in cap, in my opinion, and Arkfall events are pretty fun when a good amount of people are on the servers. It has problems with framerate and occasional glitches and shit like that, but they've been patching it and fixing things pretty regularly and it feels like Trion actually gives a shit about how well it runs as opposed to the "Deal with it" kind of attitude a lot of companies have about their online games.
I dunno..I think it's a fun game, despite it's dodgy Borderlands/Fallout rip-off ideas and god-awful fucking characters and dialogue (gee, you'd never guess it's set in the universe of a SyFy original show!)

SolRo - 2013-04-14

Mostly one-staring this because you've managed to be so awkward talking about a game that even I want to call you a nerd and take away your lunch money.

Hooker - 2013-04-14

Ever since Grand Theft Auto III and Halo: Combat Evolved some 11+ years ago now, I've been waiting for a company to release an MMO-not-RPG. A game where you're actually co-operating with friends in a persistent action/shooter/something game instead of just making a dedicated server game (PlanetSide). This seems to be the first actual game in that idea, but I've long since gotten bored of keeping up with the latest games and, when I went over to a friends house and saw him playing this, it looked pretty damn shoddy. Is it actually worthwhile?

RocketBlender - 2013-04-14

The guys who made Halo and finally broke free from microsoft are working on a game called Destiny, that fits the MMP shooter bill, apparently. I really know nothing about it, but you can find it easily enough at Bungee's website.

Hooker - 2013-04-15

Going by the Wikipedia entry alone, it sounds like a stripped-down MMO that can only be played on consoles. :\

RocketBlender - 2013-04-15

Awww fuck, is it console only? I just sold off my xbox for steam credit last month. Oh well...

StanleyPain - 2013-04-16

No it's PC as well. But the server communities are separate....360 people can only play with 360 people, etc.

Sudan no1 - 2013-04-14

I won't one star this because it would be a shame if it was removed from the frontpage before other nerds could weigh in, but I've been seeing ads for this show and it sounds like an obnoxiously pandering, overambitious crapfest.

Millard - 2013-04-14

It's very bad without being aggressively bad. I saw the premiere episode at a press event for the game and was rolling my eyes the entire time. The lead character is smarmy and obnoxious but not in the fun Han Solo/Mal Reynolds way; just shitty and annoying. And the rest of the cast can't come near compensating for him.

The show will be cancelled at the end of the season, and I'll be really curious as to how the game will subsist after that.

RocketBlender - 2013-04-14

Wait, this game is a TV tie-in?

I thought it was just a shooter MMO in a Post-apocalypse setting.

Millard - 2013-04-14

It's a theoretically ambitious attempt to create a new property via a television show and a game that launch at the same time. SyFy tried something similar with their Red Faction TV show that came out around the same time as Red Faction: Armageddon. In the end, Armageddon performed so poorly that the video game series is never coming back, and the television show had a pilot TV movie aired but never went to series.

God bless SyFy for trying their best, but I'm pretty sure that this is going to end up in the same state after the next year or so.

RocketBlender - 2013-04-14

That honestly sounds kind of cool. I googled it a bit last night, and the idea of the show and game co-existing and affecting one another is awesome.

The only thing is, I don't have a ton of faith in Syfy. I mean, for one thing, they're a channel literally made exclusively for nerds, they should know better than to go with that name. Plus everything else.

StanleyPain - 2013-04-14

If the show is anything like the game's main storyline, it will suck balls. I'm sorry to say, but the writing in this is fucking awful on all sorts of levels.

RocketBlender - 2013-04-14

Finally, I've been asking around for people's opinions about this game, it'd be nice to hear from some of the other POE users.

I've been tempted by this for a while, the idea behind it sounds awesome, but it's hard to ignore bad press, so it's nice to hear someone's enjoying it despite that.

You may be able to answer my biggest question about the game, Stanley; how much grind is there in the game? As fun as it sounds, it's being classified as an MMO. I have no interest in going on the same 'raid' twice a week to fight with 40 other spiteful nerds over an item that likely won't show up to begin with. If the game requires 10-20 hours a week just to keep up with the community, there's no chance it's for me.

Truth be told, if I did pick it up, I'd mostly be playing it with a single friend when we both had time for co-op, so it would be nice to know we'd be able to enjoy it as such without worrying about guilds and all that time consuming crap.

Also: How are vehicles in the game? Every time someone makes a game set in a Mad Max kind of world, they always seem to miss out on the chance to do something badass with it. God, vehicles in borderlands were shit.

RocketBlender - 2013-04-14

5 because I don't want to see it off the front page before I can hear some replies.

StanleyPain - 2013-04-14

Not sure what's up everyone's ass, but this is about the GAME, not the shit-looking TV show. This video was made to promote the GAME, this isn't even footage from the show, and like I said, I just submitted the video to see if there were any other players here wanting to talk about the game since we don't have forums anymore.
Anyway: @rocket It's not really an RPG sort of thing, so there's very little grind. In fact, it doesn't feel like there's really any grind at all. You don't really "level" per se, you just gain skill points, and since you can only use X number of skills at any one time depending on how far you are, you'll probably have leftover skillpoints at the end of the day as you'll be waiting to unlock things. The "loot" in the game, such as it is, is exclusive to each player, so if you see stuff lying around on the ground, it's yours and no one elses and everyone gets something for participating in co-op games and Arkfalls (which are the big monster battle things which take place once every 15-30 minutes or so), though your ranking is based on DPS. The game encourages a lot of helping each other out, anyone can just come along while you're in a mission and help out and if you're in a random event (there's occasional random shit that happens in the world like "rescue these people" or whatever) you always get a little something for reward just for helping. For the most part, the best items come from buying the random item packs which are bought with different forms of in-game currency, though you CAN spend real money if you want to. As for the vehicles, they're fun but nothing special and the advertising for the game is misleading that there's all these cars in the game. The cars are exclusive right now only to people who pre-ordered. Otherwise, everyone gets their own bound ATV (like a mount I guess) which you definitely need to get around. You can just summon them anywhere and no one else can use them. There's other bikes in the game, but the difference is cosmetic, so buying them is kind of a waste of money IMO. They're fun, though, but like most vehicles in games like this they're prone to getting hung up on things if you don't drive carefully.

RocketBlender - 2013-04-14

I apologize in advance, because I'm going to double the nerd factor of this room by asking this;

What kind of stuff can you buy with real money? I don't mind the kind of stuff League of Legends does; those that drop real cash get access to different skins and character unlocks, mostly cosmetic stuff that doesn't actually impact game balance in the slightest. What does bother me is when people that are spending real money (something I don't do, especially on a game I already bought) are just leagues ahead of the free players in terms of power.

StanleyPain - 2013-04-14

Real money (bits!) can be spent to buy random item boxes (which is a huge waste of money since they can be bought with in-game currency and after awhile start to lose their efficacy...you usually find better stuff by playing), variant vehicles (again, total waste of money because all the variations can be bought in-game and the differences are largely cosmetic), 24-hour boosts (more EXP, etc.), and insanely over-priced costumes. This may change later, but right now anyone spending more than a few bucks on a boost for his or her whole clan is nuts, in my opinion.
Technically, the only thing this effects in terms of game balance are the PVP modes (which are completely separate from the core game). I played a few sessions of Shadow War which is the big 50 vs. 50 mode and as near as I could figure you can bring your own equipment with you, which I thought was odd. Also worth mentioning, the "Ark Hunter Training" thing on the Defiance website where you enter codes for bonuses is a good place to get started. All 120 codes are out in the wild now, so if you just take some time to enter the codes in you get some good starting bonuses like more inventory, a few skill boosts, and good starting weapons.

RocketBlender - 2013-04-14

That doesn't sound all that bad, and damnit if the game doesn't seem fun every time I look at it.

kingarthur - 2013-04-14

The tv show looks terrible, barring some interesting make up FX.

zerdzer - 2013-04-14

this game is absolute shit.

StanleyPain - 2013-04-14

"Absolute" shit? So what's the standard for "absolute?" I mean..so we've set the level of absolute at Defiance, so then nothing is more shit than Defiance? What would "almost absolute" shit be? So then it's worse than Alien Coloniel Marines? What level of shit would that game be is Defiance is "Absolute?" This is a confusing standard you've set.

RocketBlender - 2013-04-14

Zerd, I'm honestly curious here; every time I see you on a recent game video, all you have to say is that the game in question is shit.

What do you consider a good game?

Mancakes - 2013-04-15

Everything I've seen about this game makes it look like it look mediocre to bad in most ways while committing the worst sin, being boring. Also the trailer is pretty bad, that CGI is downright horrible for a prerendered promotional trailer.

zerdzer - 2013-04-15

Well, a good game is a game that leaves a real impression on you. A good game makes you forget there's anything but the game for the duration of your playing it. A good game is designed with a desire for these things.

Most games these days (Defiance included) are an original idea (maybe even a good idea) that has been hack sawed apart and glued back together by a publisher's approval process, and what you get at the end is a generic video game meant to appeal to many tastes with no distinctive flavor of its own.

When you've been playing a lot of video games for a long time, you can begin to tell when a game is a (relatively) pure expression of its original inspiration, or when it's a pizza fucken shit Cowadootdoot meant for mass appeal. Defiance is sadly one of those games. If you think about Defiance, and really compare it to other games out there, maybe you can see why, too. We shouldn't talk about these games, it's a waste of time, they're white noise.

Examples of good games would be: Diablo (not Diablo 2 or 3), Demon's Souls/Dark Souls, Planescape: Torment, Doom, Counter Strike, Battlefield 2, System Shock 1 and 2.

Examples of mediocre but not absolute shit (these games have some good stuff, but still could be way better): The Elder Scrolls series, Bioshock series, Diablo 2, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, Final Fantasy series.

Examples of Bad Fucking Games: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (and any Call of Duty after 2), Diablo 3, World of Warcraft (pretty much any Activision game), Medal of Honor: Warfighter(and the reboot).

Pillager - 2013-04-14

It didn't appeal to me.

The A.I. was execrable. The audio/music just didn't excite me. I loved the first Borderlands game & now I see why it wasn't in third person. I loathed the gauntlet monster closets. Menus & the inventory screen just about killed me.

However, I liked the combat & the vehicles handled well. It has potential, but I want to see some polish. I might come back to it.

Caminante Nocturno - 2013-04-15

This whole thing strikes me as tacky.
