Why did they give The Machine grandma hair?

SolRo - 2013-04-28

so this is an unboxing video of the newest android model?

Caminante Nocturno - 2013-04-28

I wish they'd stop packing androids in that jelly stuff.

It gives them grandma hair.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2013-04-28

I can see why anything related to an age beyond puberty might disturb some "customers."

Caminante Nocturno - 2013-04-28

Listen, man. These things are fucking expensive, even the younger-looking ones. Those models, they're smaller, they require fewer resources, and so they cost less. Even then, they're pricey. Add to that insurance, service contracts, waivers, licenses, international shipping (they don't build them right over here and we all know it), and premade replacements for custom parts, and we're talking at least six figures.

If you went for an adult, it would bump up to seven or eight. Hell, I hear the stuff they make the tits out of these days costs more than most cars. You can call me creepy all you want, but until they start making the adult models cheaper, then you're just going to have to live with it.

Caminante Nocturno - 2013-04-28

You want to talk about disturbing? Let's talk personality modules. Sure, they finally listened to our complaints and found a way to change them without opening their heads up. Sure, they reduced accidental memory wipes to almost nothing. That's great and all, but they still hold grudges. They ALWAYS figure out what you're doing to them before you're done, and they ALWAYS hold a grudge about it for days. Sometimes for weeks.

I don't know how people who prefer more 'emotional' personalities live with it. The ones I use make it feel like a palmtop mortician is lurking through my home. Once, I asked her to stay away from the knives until her mood improved. I sure as hell didn't program that piercing glare into her!

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2013-04-28

Actually, apart from making fuck-bots or robots that are required to precisely emulate the functions of a biped humanoid (maybe you need one to replace a human where the infrastructure is too expensive or troublesome to retrofit), making them (as Asimov put it) "humaniform" just makes no sense unless you've got unlimited resources to throw at your pet robot.

It's only a "slave" if you actually give it some semblance of sentience, which is also very "sci-fi magic," and again, why would you want your appliance to cry if you told it to perform its primary function (unless that's something you want your robo-loli to do every time)?

If autonomous machines ever become a thing, they'll look like whatever tool they're replacing: You won't have a robot shaped like a truck driver, you'll have a truck-shaped robot.

Caminante Nocturno - 2013-04-28

You fucking goddamn Asimov fans ruin everything.

SolRo - 2013-04-29

The humanoid robot is useful in an environment where it has to navigate areas built for human use and use tools or devices intended for human use. While SPCs specialized robot will have its place, multifunctional designs are useful too.

See Ghost in the Shell office worker androids vs the AI tank design.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2013-04-29

Did you miss the bit where I pointed out where humanoid designs would make sense? But that would, again, be highly specialized and quite expensive where the cost was worth it. This would likely be a place where the robot would work alongside or replace humans in an environment (most likely artificial) that couldn't be easily changed to accommodate a less specialized machine. Or a brothel, as I also pointed out.

And you can make a very multifunctional robot that isn't humanoid. I'd argue a robot could be far more multifunctional if it wasn't humanoid in its basic design; we have a lot of baggage, as a physical construct, which a machine could be designed to do without.

The reason a lot of humanoid robot stuff is implausible is based on things like having to have the machine self-correct, stabilize, and use a human gait to get around if you're going to make it look human. Far more efficient models can navigate our environments without all that jazz.

As far as anime's idea of robots goes: "Hey, someone get me a million-dollar robot to fetch me some coffee and take some notes."
"Fuck you, get your own damn coffee, and either use your flesh-slave of an assistant or use the computer we bought your idiotic ass to get your work done."

Caminante Nocturno - 2013-04-28

I hear someone tried installing a 'tsundere' personality into one of those black market combat-ready models and it tore him apart like a piece of fresh bread.

William Topaz McGonagall - 2013-04-29

You get what you pay for. These unlicensed American contractors, they hear "tsundere" and think it's all the same shit. You put Kirino type tsundere in a combat model and you're just asking for trouble. If they'd gone with Kurisu type tsundere there would have been no problem. Pure amateurishness.

Jet Bin Fever - 2013-04-28

He eventually fucks it, right?

Caminante Nocturno - 2013-04-28

Not according to Steam Powered BUZZ KILL!

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2013-04-29

On the contrary. Unless it's got some other use, this is precisely the kind of robot you'd make to get your ya-yas. It's stupid to make it for anything else that doesn't require a human-looking face on your walking Mrs. Coffee.

I just maintain that Caminante would find it unfuckable because he's more into, ah, "fresher" looking models.

gravelstudios - 2013-04-29

She does come pre-lubricated, apparently. I'm surprised he didn't unwrap her with his teeth.

TeenerTot - 2013-04-29

Why a female?
Wouldn't androgyny make the most sense, build-and-parts-wise?

Oh, I get it. If you want something to give off an air of submission immediately, make it female, right?

This is stupid.
