this is universally recognized as one of the worst movies ever made

Old_Zircon - 2013-04-30

It's better than Forrest Gump.

Old_Zircon - 2013-04-30

And Titanic, but that kind of goes without saying.

Jet Bin Fever - 2013-04-30

Oh, Titanic isn't THAT bad. I mean, the romance stuff is shitty, but it's not nearly equal to this fucking monstrosity.

memedumpster - 2013-04-30

This is one of the best movies ever made.

SolRo - 2013-04-30

This is one of the movies ever made.

StanleyPain - 2013-04-30

This is a made movie.

Koda Maja - 2013-04-30

The most accurate movie review of all time.

Meerkat - 2013-04-30

This was bad in an awesome way. I watched it and it was all the crapitude I had been led to believe it was. It was very satisfying.

TheOtherCapnS - 2013-04-30

I once watched this movie and tried to count the number of NON-Dutch angle shots. I didn't even get to two hands.

Raggamuffin - 2013-04-30

Yes, and in fact I must insist on a "Dutch Angle" tag.

fedex - 2013-04-30

I concur

Hooker - 2013-04-30

In terms of sheer astounding stupid, this movie probably wins the stupid * money high score.

I don't think a movie like this can ever be made again.

cognitivedissonance - 2013-04-30

Uh.

Atlas Shrugged?

Uh.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2013-04-30

Sadly, Battlefield Earth appears to have been profitable (unless the fraud inherent in its production took care of that). It still makes Atlas Shrugged even more ironic, but still...

If you go to SFDebris.com, they have a multi-part analysis of the amazing series of blunders, crimes, and nigh-unbelievable douchebaggery that went into Battlefield Earth.

Hooker - 2013-04-30

You can still make horrendous movies, but you can't make them with this movie's budget.

StanleyPain - 2013-04-30

It wasn't profitable. It probably would have roughly broken even, but the production company engaged in all sorts of fraudulent bookkeeping (Scientologists committing fraud???) and were later sued by investors which effectively ended the CoS's plans to fund a sequel.
There are also rumors that Travolta, despite being and ardent Scientologist himself, purposefully engineered part of the demise of the film behind the scenes (as well as his shitty on-screen performance) because he was mad that he didn't get to play the hero due to his age.

Old_Zircon - 2013-04-30

This movie is incredible.

Sanest Man Alive - 2013-04-30

I could swear this entire movie was already posted here, but I might just be mashing all the terrible clips together in my head.

Sanest Man Alive - 2013-04-30

At one point, Hubbard had close ties to the Ordo Templi Orientis (Aleister Crowley's church/group/whatever), before he split and made off with tens of thousands of dollars and Crowley's then-wife.

Still the only entertaining thing Hubbard ever did.

cognitivedissonance - 2013-04-30

Depends on the angle that you see it. He was present for the Babalon Working, but I don't think Hubbard was ever really in with Crowley personally. Crowley's notion of "wife" was pretty alien to us mundanes. She was just another Scarlet Woman to him. That money was Parsons', not Crowley's, and Crowley would've seen right through Hubbard if it HAD been Crowley's money. Parsons was a walking wallet to both of them.

StanleyPain - 2013-04-30

Considering that this book was basically just pulp fiction, this movie is actually kind of fitting for it.

chumbucket - 2013-04-30

A perfect adaptation of source material

Binro the Heretic - 2013-04-30

I love this wonderfully awful movie.

No scenery is safe from the Travolta's mighty jaws!!!

Jet Bin Fever - 2013-04-30

I'll get drunk and watch this sometime soon. In the meantime, here are some stars.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2013-10-08

It's been taken down... THANK GOD!
