Hey instead of jumping down Tg's throat and immediately getting all hateful and dog pile'ish, maybe we could have a discussion about the issue. Obviously they are using rhetoric with the Nazi stuff, but there are some actual (albeit tenuous) parallels with this and how things were under that regime. Of course, the parallels end at the point that these people are allowed to go on their way, since if you pulled this with an SS guy, you would have gotten summarily executed or shipped off to a camp.

Whether or not you agree with the rhetoric of the people being stopped, doesn't it kinda disturb you that they have these checkpoints set up within the US borders, that they are stopping people arbitrarily and without probable cause, that they are pretty obviously using their authority to intimidate people and compel them to follow their illicit orders, and that they completely buckle when faced with someone who knows that the checkpoints are unconstitutional because they know they would get in trouble?

Government agents aren't supposed to skulk about and use ignorance and misinformation to get their way. They aren't supposed to buckle if you stand up to them. Everything they do is supposed to be supported by our laws (I realize there are grey areas, but I don't believe that this is one of them), and should hold up under any kind of scrutiny.

What really bothers me about these is that if the drivers weren't saying exactly the right things, if they made one little slip up, it would end up with them out of their car and face down handcuffed on the pavement. In fact, that's still a possibility even if they said and did all the right things, if they just happen to get the wrong officer or supervisor.

What should bother anyone watching is that these points are part of the War on Illegal Immigration™ and every time we do one of these domestic "Wars" we lose the war and large groups of people lose all kinds of other things.

Also, apparently every US Citizen needs a camcorder to protect themselves against finding their word pitted against the word of a sworn officer in court.

To save time in this situation, I would state that I was a U.S. Citizen. I would also obey direct orders (not requests) from a cop if they showed up.

If I was the border guard who found themselves at an impasse with an "obvious asshole lawyer type" who had studied and insisted on exercising their Constitutional rights at an immigration stop, I would get the results of the check on the license plate, then conclude my visual inspection of the exterior and, working with my supervisor, assess whether in our best judgment the vehicle probably did, or probably did not contain illegal weapons, explosives, or slaves.

If it probably did not, we must wave him on and focus on the 99% that comply.

If it probably did, we must change tact and apologize, but yes you're being detained. I am now ordering, not asking, you to pull over into that marked area over there for a search that satisfies me, and if you do not, we must escalate to non-lethal force.

I understand that you are probably just exercising your rights and we are infringing, and evidence might be inadmissable but that no longer matters as much as the potential for illegal weapons, explosives, or slaves. Hopefully we can all shake hands after the quick search of large covered areas has been completed and you'll be on your way.

Calmly and politely asserting your rights when faced with an unconstitutional use of state power seems like a reasonable solution to me.
