Good clean fun

I've never seen this movie and now I'm completely going to have my opinion shaped by the attempted rape scene here.

Old_Zircon - 2013-05-10

It's OK, because after another hour or sexual harassment he finally gets the girl.

I'd never seen it either, this is the standout creepy scene but the whole thing is just as casually sexist as you'd expect from one of the better, less offensive late 70s screwball comedies. It's creepier than Porky's but not as creepy as Porky's 2.

I also didn't realize that Wet Hot American Summer is less a parody of summer camp movies in general and more just a parody of Meatballs in particular.

Old_Zircon - 2013-05-10

Don't get me wrong, I totally recommend it, it's a lesser classic of its genre, it just happens to be an uncomfortably misogynistic genre.

I recall this as being a funny movie in the 70s/80s. I caught part of it just recenlty late at night, and boy, it's pretty brutal how lame it seemed. Times have indeed changed, and I'm old.

Old_Zircon - 2013-05-10

Almost all of the movies like this aged really badly, but I kind of like them more now because of that.

Weirdly enough, Ski School, which seemed like a horrible, plotless attempt years too late, aged into a surprisingly self-aware deconstruction of 80s screwball comedy tropes, although I'm not sure how deliberate that was. It has a lot of the cast of Summer School in it, though, so it might be at least partially deliberate.

Bill Murray is a rapist.

Quad9Damage - 2013-05-10

He calls himself BillMurray and he says "I like rape."

Scrotum H. Vainglorious - 2013-05-10

You could do this to women in the 70s and not have to worry about any repercussions like sexual harassment charges.

Old_Zircon - 2013-05-10

the thing that's really creepy about these movies is that the people who made them don't just ignore the psychological stress placed on women living in an environment of routine sexual harassment, they actually tend to very directly acknowledge it - it's the joke.

(wrestling noises)

baleen - 2013-05-10

Holy shit, I do not remember this scene.

Quad9Damage - 2013-05-10

Five very uncomfortable stars. That was seriously spiraling downward into "I Spit on Your Grave" for a few seconds there.

Quad9Damage - 2013-05-11

It amazes me how many 80's comedies have rape jokes in them now. Hell, "Sixteen Candles" has Jake Ryan talking about how he'd like to go upstairs and fuck his passed out girlfriend.
