I miss the days when hip hop scared whitey. Even when it was positive it scared whitey. Fight the Power!
|
Old_Zircon - 2013-05-13 I wonder if Tipper ever got over hearing that Prince song.

"Dray"
the fact that people don't get upset like this about music anymore is the most damning evidence of its cultural irrelevance today.

Dinkin Flicka - 2013-05-14 It was all a smoke screen -- there are a hundred analogous stories & issues being reported - and shoved down people's throats so they think it's a big deal - at this very second.

Did Iced Tea and Ice Cube ever get together? They could become a sweet and refreshing beverage.

Ice Cube's verse is the worst; Tupac's is the best. I, for one, am unsurprised by this.

I hate Tipper Gore so much. Every time I think about Bush 2000, I try and remember the silver lining: we didn't have to deal with Tipper and Lieberman.
Also, it's nice to see a young Jello, from back before he left music and went into politics. I remember reading a series of articles he wrote during the early 2000s, where he bitched about how awful the music industry had become "since his day", rehashing the same moralistic arguments Juan and the Rabbi use here. Just replace "scary black people" with "reactionary Jewish businessmen" and post-90s Biafra would be right at home.
In retrospect, he was always a bit of a sanctimonious, self-serving prick, but at least when he was in the punk rock business, it was in his own self-interest to stick up for the good guys.

Syd Midnight - 2013-05-15 Given that there were more than a few thousand rap and/or metal fans in Florida in 2000, I've always thought that Tipper was one of several things that cost Al Gore the election. He should have divorced her ass a few years earlier.

At least with Ice-T, he gave the "people on the street are like this, you can't censor it" argument. '90s tabloid talk shows owed their existence to a similar argument, although the "THESE ARE THE DREGS OF YOUR COUNTRY, AMERICA! YOU SUCK" mock indignation was tacked on, to justify the daytime syndication.
