So it's "Theta Sigma" ("Thete" for short), but I swear he's saying "Pete", and I can't imagine a better real name for the Doctor than "Pete".

In the McCoy era it was mentioned that "Theta Sigma" is just a nickname, but it doesn't matter. The Doctor's real name is Pete, which is exactly why he insists on being called the Doctor.

It gets better. In the books, it is revealed that the closest thing he has to a surname is Lungbarrow.

The big secret is that Time Lords are hung up on names, and the universe doesn't really give a shit. Some 27,575,322,275 dead people thought his name was John Smith, the Doctor, or God. I don't think they'd find screaming horrific oblivion more comfortable knowing he has a secret name that he didn't use while killing them.

I think the show might be pulling the ultimate double bait-and-switch. The season finale revealed that his real name is utterly irrelevant. It also revealed the existence of a secret incarnation who lost his title. The 50th anniversarry special will reveal his birth name, because it's the only name the John Hurt incarnation has left. And absolutely nothing will happen as a result.
