This thing was amazingly popular for a while, mostly for the "what will it do next" aspect of the game. I imagine it appealed to everyone's inner autistic as well.

I made it to the second "Twittersphere" and had to stop. I'm already sick enough.

"Candy Box is a video game based on watching numbers go up. So every video game."

That is patently not true. In fact a ridiculous statement which could only be implied seriously by someone who it totally uncultured in the medium of computer games.
If I were to issue a similar statement about music (for instance all music is about the simple ratio between various wavelenghts) film, prose, poetry etc. It would be lambasted as a complete boor.
Of course computer games are the 'new guy' so of course their not art and cannot be just as powerful as the others.
This is just like how film was received by most of the art community upon its rise.

The ironic this is that (as in film) the early decades are some of the most vital. We are in a golden ages of games, people are making the game equivalents to bicycle thieves, the man with a movie camera, metropolis etc. right now!
Some examples..
Myst
Grim Fandango
Minecraft
Kerbal space program
Frozen synapse

If that statement was in jest than I'd be a bit embarassed now but you triggered a vigorous reaction in me!

I was only half-joking. Yeah, some games use the medium to do some pretty daring stuff with narrative structure, but on the whole, video games are largely trapped in an artistic ghetto of their own design, fueled by a number of factors ranging from incidental technological limitations (i.e. the fact that it's easier to program an AI for mindless killing than stimulating conversation) to the industry's inability to understand that engineers often make for terrible storytellers. Even the much-vaunted indie circuit remains a little too self-congratulatory, frequently mistaking a unique visual motif for actual storytelling.

For a more positive example of video games being used as something besides a violent calculator, I recommend everyone play through Save the Date, a free PC game you can beat in about an hour. I won't spoil anything, but it raises some pretty powerful questions about the audience's role in interpreting a story.

Wow a reasonable debate on the internet!
What you saw is true of an awful lots of games. But like any artform at least 90%, lets say, of work produced is total shit!
You have to really dig around for the good stuff.

Why I love games is that they do not need conventional aspects of film like narrative at all! Ye,s you cant have good truly interactive dialogue but you dont need dialogue at all either!

Games are not films (something many developers dont grasp) so there are entirely new possibilities to be explored for which there are no conventions yet.

Minecraft and Kerbal space program are good examples of these new narrativeless possibilities. Also with mods being encouraged and easy to make and share there is not only no definitive narrative but no definitive build of the game! The users change it become part of the creative process

"say" not "saw"

I'm the kind of game developer that is better seen than heard. Im fine making the gameplay content and letting someone else come up with the story - i blew my storytelling wad on things I won't get paid for already, years ago.

Its time to go outside guys.

It was amusing for 15 minutes until you got to the whale and realized it was just going to waiting around and eventually wasting time with that potion system. Don't bother at that point.
