I liked this film for the most part. Yeah, the bauble was Disney showing off that it could do computer animation, and John Byner's voice acting for Gurgi was kind of an irritant, but it was made before Disney got really worried about having horrific imagery in their movies.
Agreed. I was really into the series of books when I was little and would love to see a sweet animated version of the whole story. Taran hanging out with the poor people and learning their totally useful trades, billions of Cauldron-born just throwing themselves to their death in a battle so bloody it stains the ground red forevermore. Fuck Yeah.
I still hate how Disney took a charming series of children's fantasy books and turned them into this insipid shitstain of a movie.
The only interesting thing about The Black Cauldron is that it's the rare animated Disney film that was censored after it was completed. Some violent scenes were removed, and Disney never released them as DVD extras or anything. The only evidence they existed is a single cel of some dude being dissolved by cauldron mist.
Except for a handful of exceptions, I pretty much loathe Disney, but this was decent. It's like a junior Lord of the Rings, complete with an Andy Serkis character. Rad stuff.
