Wow nice. For those of us who go to bed at 9pm, I was wondering how I could see this.

This was great.

dementomstie - 2013-06-03

This only shows how much of the series I'd missed, but they did a good job of recapping it. This is an amazing episode.

Innocent Bystander - 2013-06-03

Hoo boy this was awesome.

Did anyone notice that Rusty apparently had sex with a prostitute-brumblefly-thingy? Yikes.

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2013-06-03

I was very slow to warm to this show... I kept wondering what all the fuss is about. I know now.
I think as the series proceeds it gets better exponentially. I love that unlike most adult swim style cartoons continuity is kept through the entire series, the characters develop a lot and the plot motivations is really clear logical.

Yep. For the first season and possibly the second, the driving theme on the show was failure: pretty much everyone was either a failure at their lives' ambitions or too clueless to realize they couldn't succeed at anything. It made for some terrific viewing, but eventually that well runs dry. Fortunately, the creators of the series had enough sense to switch to growth and change as their main theme.

I still can't decide whether Rusty is a brilliant scientist who is completely burned out on science, or the son of Jonas Venture who simply didn't have the talent everyone assumed he must. Speaking of Jonas, it's funny how he was made out to be something like the ideal father* in the first season or two, but in everything since then, he's been revealed to be about 90% asshole but with 100% good PR. This speaks to Rusty being less of a failure -- he's a better father than his was, he at least lets his sons pursue their own interests rather than ram science down their throats.

*: By "ideal father" I mean he typifies the standard set in boyhood adventure stories since forever, in which the boys are all plucky athletic adventurers and their dads encourage that sort of thing through breathtaking adventures in exciting locations. In the real world such fathers would be neglectful and would be thrown in jail for child endangerment, but within those stories you sort of accept it as the nature of the genre.

Rusty was never a great scientist. I think he had the potential but clearly never applied himself, although his father fucked him up so completely that it's not really surprising that he turned out to be a lazy, drug-addicted dick. He just sits in this moldering museum of incredible shit and knows vaguely how some of it fits together. The real arc of redemption going on, IMO, is that he also began as a really crappy father as well... he began like what his dad was without the PR. When Hank and Dean lost their cloning safety net he began, very slowly, to get better at that. He's still really bad at it but at least it looks like he's engaged and not just putting on an act. We're a long long way from that time he stole their livers. Meanwhile, previous father-substitute Brock starts this episode (and season?) by vanishing without a backwards glance.

By which I all mean, I agree with you Bort.

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2013-06-04

I think one thing that gives this show an edge over many other 'wacky' cartoons is that it has true pathos.

One gripe I *do* have, however, is that they use too many pop/nerd culture references. I dont think the show needs that anymore and just cheapens it.

GovtCensor - 2013-06-03

This delivered and how. Long wait, totally worth it.

cognitivedissonance - 2013-06-04

Augustus St. Cloud looks like an adult Herbie Popnecker.

Syd Midnight - 2013-06-04

Wins my "Coincidental Obscure Joke of the Month" award for the second to last line, because I was just telling someone earlier today that "how to tell if you're dreaming" trick.

bac - 2013-06-04

I think that's a reference to the season four episode where Hank left a message for himself on his watch to tell him that he did in fact get laid over summer break, but for various reasons it was best to have his memory of it and the events leading up to it to be erased.

Checking a digital clock is a great way to tell if you're dreaming or not though. completely agree with that.

Bort - 2013-06-04

That's how I took it too.

There was not nearly enough Dr. Orpheus in this episode, but since there can't ever be enough, no sense complaining about it.

Syd Midnight - 2013-06-05

Dang, you're right. Hank and Dean will probably grow up thinking blackout sex is normal.

memedumpster - 2013-06-04

I enjoyed this.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2013-06-07

Dean is my favorite character but I often feel he's neglected. I'm glad to see they are finally giving him more interesting scenes and character development.
