I've always wondered if the nature of irrational numbers, extremely large numbers, and imaginary numbers were just byproducts of the way we represent numbers. And the reason we cannot comprehend these numbers is because our number system is insufficient.

Or maybe it's the other way around. That we use this number system because that's the best system our brains can handle.

Why would "our number system" be insufficient? If you're talking about the decimal number system, then I agree: irrational numbers, for example, may seem mysterious to people who think only in terms of the decimal system (as the decimal system can basically be thought of as a (possibly infinite) series of additions of rational numbers, and the set of rational numbers is closed under addition). But our number system goes well beyond the decimals. The same case could be made for imaginary numbers. Extremely large numbers, similarly, we can express and conceptualize perfectly well; the difficulty comes from being unable to conceptualize extremely large _amounts_ of anything, I think.

As the son of a British math teacher, let me just say: fuck you guys. No math week.

MATH GO HOME.

EvilHomer - 2013-06-07

Also, this guy sounds like an American approximating a British accent.

Jet Bin Fever - 2013-06-08

Lets at least pick something fun and easy to film if we're going to have another silly theme week.

Change - 2013-06-08

Are you nuts?

Math is the best!

EvilHomer - 2013-06-08

Did you know that math was responsible for the atomic bomb? Fact.

Change - 2013-06-08

Oh, ew, wait, you're British?

EvilHomer - 2013-06-08

Half British. My father's an immigrant. Oh, the hardships he faced as a first generation Oxford-educated Englishman! Why, he had to settle on a job as a math teacher because the New England prep school circuit didn't have any openings for philosophy teachers! Not for Limey, at any rate.

One day, we shall overcome.

unknown specimen - 2013-06-08

oh man maths week!? Finally my years of boring nerd hobbies comes in handy. Take that high school guidance councilor.

Jet Bin Fever - 2013-06-08

I don't want Math(s) week. It would mean an endless series of 15 minute long videos with almost 0 entertainment value. Yes, math is neat, but we don't need 15 videos in a row of it.

gravelstudios - 2013-06-08

I'll have you know that I watched this channel for a good long while yesterday. Some of us like 15 minute videos with almost 0 entertainment value.

Chocolate Jesus - 2013-06-08

Chocolate Jesus is boring tag please.

I was led to believe that Irrational Numbers were the Soviet response to Imaginary Numbers, an invention of the Americans, who sought to prove the decadence of Western Imperialism.

memedumpster - 2013-06-08

Math is proof that the ancient and prehistoric worlds were ineffably smarter than we are today. No one alive today could have come close to inventing math if it did not already exist. There isn't a single human alive that could even be remotely considered the same caliber of animal as the flea infested cave ape that figured out one and one are two. Cantor came close to being that cool, but he didn't even get to the part where math involved numbers before he went crazy. The idea of putting the numbers on the paper drove him manshit (apeshit is actually a compliment in math). It's just sad.

cognitivedissonance - 2013-06-08

Absolute bullshit. You might as well attempt to use linguistics as proof of a creator.

Baron_Von_Bad_Beaver - 2013-06-08

I'm not really sure how you could quantify intelligence through the ages; saying that people from one era in our history are smarter than another. And what does smarter mean exactly? I think you're giving the past a little too much credit, to be honest--you're looking at the best of the best thinkers who's work has carried through the ages. A lot of these great thinkers lived in an era when it was accepted medical fact that your blood evaporated out of your skull.
