I think they're running into a wall here. The last generation of gamers who gave two shits about consoles is getting too old to give shits about consoles anymore.

The "second video game crash" might be the end of the industry as we know it. Even the companies who have been doing this for more than a decade don't know what the fuck to do anymore. Nintendo has had its most lackluster launch since the Virtual Boy, Microsoft seems to be selling a crippled TiVo that might also play games some time in the future, and Sony is the only company that seems to want to sell a gaming console.

It's weird to think that Sony might single-handedly prevent the death of the gaming console.

What really fucks Nintendo is they no longer have their portable gaming monopoly that kept them afloat during past fumbled console generations. I think it's been at least 3 years since I've seen someone playing a DS in public.

This is probably the generation they'll go the way of Sega.

I don't know FABIO. In the six months I've had my 3DS I've managed to get a ton of people on Street Pass. I think the 3DS will do fine.

Considering how well the 3DS is selling, the Vita is the one that is pretty much dead at this point.

Also, the crash already started some years ago. Dozens of vg studios have closed doors because now a game has to sell around 3 million copies to become remotely "profitable". The crash certainly won't scrath big companies like Nintendo, but smaller studios are getting the end of the stick.

The industry shakes up and shutters a crap load of third party dev houses and publishers around the transitioning stages of new console generations. If anything, the "big crash" of the 80's was the first major example of this shake up, which caught everyone off guard. There were other things going on that made it hugely significant, but it really is just the normal generational transition hitting at a time when the industry had no follow up.

Even if the console gaming platform as we know it goes away, it only means that the video game industry has changed and moved onto a different set of platforms. It's like saying Hollywood will eventually crash and burn. That's just not likely to happen. It will just alter and change its delivery of overbudget shit.
