That lady who's talking at the beginning -- Rosanne Barr?

Ursa_minor - 2013-06-21

God I love him, and absolutely abhor these types of conspiracies or any of my friends who regurgitate them.

Old_Zircon - 2013-06-21

I have a hard time maintaining a friendship with anyone who believes this kind of stuff, because it's usually just the tip of the iceberg.

jangbones - 2013-06-21

obviously both of you are CIA operatives

takewithfood - 2013-06-21

Potholer does some great STUFF, but his distinct pattern of SPEAKING tends to drive me CRAZY after a few MINUTES.

ashtar. - 2013-06-21

Never listen to the BBC

takewithfood - 2013-06-21

Am I really the only one?

bac - 2013-06-22

Yes, you are. Although I can't stand Carl Sagan's voice, and I'm told I'm singular in regards to that.

takewithfood - 2013-06-22

I grew up watching Carl Sagan, but he always sounds like he's doing a Carl Sagan impression, if that makes any sense.

memedumpster - 2013-06-21

I have come to literally hate hearing random humans speak. I don't know how Potholer54 hasn't gargled buckshot by now listening to all these people. I wish he could bottle that strength and sell it to me, I'd pay a premium. Seriously, schizophrenics know we watch their videos, if you do too, Potholer54, please, name your price. I'll pay in Euros, Pounds, Blood, Gold, Clean Water, please, have mercy.

Spaceman Africa - 2013-06-21

what the heck IS in our oxygen supply?

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2013-06-21

I hear it's being cut with nearly 70% nitrogen.

dementomstie - 2013-06-21

I don't think that Potholer should be mocking Enigma Force Five. This is fantastic. I haven't watched a full video of his before, he's doing some great stuff.

Sexy Duck Cop - 2013-06-21

The thing that always drives me crazy about conspiracy theorists is their unfounded sense of blind arrogance. You never hear a conspiracy theorist say "I could be wrong" or "maybe it's just me." They just jump straight to "WHY IS THE GOVERNMENT PUTTING RAINBOWS IN MY TAP WATER AND, INCIDENTALLY, WHY IS EVERYONE ELSE SO DUMB?"

I remember commenting on a Youtube video where some light leaked into a CCTV feed, causing a bloom that many people thought was an angel. For some stupid reason, I tried to apply my videography background and explain to them that this is a common effect that happens to anyone who has operated a camera for longer than eight seconds. Naturally, they called me a moron because Jesus, how could a bloom effect not be an angel?

If I had enough yarn and thumbtacks, I daresay there might be a connection between conspiracy theories, ignorance, and social frustration.

memedumpster - 2013-06-21

As a straight up paranoid wacko during the W Dynasty, I can honestly say that it's about 25% ignorance, and 75% raging DSM quality narcissism. Part of my road to recovery was trading my narcissism for good old fashioned arrogance, but I'm still working on the sense of humor to mortar it all together.

Thank you for letting me share.

Old_Zircon - 2013-06-23

I forget where I heard or read it originally, but conspiracy theories really are quite often about latching on to someone else's tragedy and making it about ME ME ME LOOK AT MEEEEEE.

1394 - 2013-06-21

HAARP Microwave Radiation Rainbow lady is my favorite.

This man has high levels of tolerance for crazy bullshit.

Old_Zircon - 2013-06-21

Potholer's great and he's obviously dead on about conspiracy theorists, but he's giving the peer review system WAAAY to much credit here. Seriously, I've known enough scientists in my life to know that that science is as rife with pissing contests, turf wars, and fighting for a limited pool of money and status as anyplace. Shit, jsut in the last year I saw some people I know have a paper rejected because the editor of the (peer reviewed) journal was doing similar research himself. A couple months after he rejected their paper, he saw them at a conference and went out of his way to talk to them about how he had started a new project that was - surprise surprise - the same thing they were studying, using data he was collecting in the same location they had collected theirs for the paper he had jsut rejected.

That kind of stuff isn't the norm but it happens pretty regularly in one form or another, as does theft of research data from grad students by professors and probably most common and most dangerous, the formation of informal cabals to discredit research that would undermine the status quo of a field's professional status or worse yet their ability to get grants and consulting work. It's basically what conspiracy theorists think is going on except it's nowhere near as organized, sinister or deliberate as they think and the motives aren't what they think. It's basically run of the mill workplace bullying, ladder climbing and territorial infighting, just like you see in any hierarchical institution like politics or large businesses. It's not universal by any means, either, but the sciences are a meritocratic institution, and like any meritocratic institution the people who are willing to set aside principles and ethics tend to rise to the top and then pull up the ladder, so the worst offenders are often the most successful and powerful, and become the public face of the sciences as a whole despite the fact that they may well be pretty mediocre scientists. It sucks because it both works against the advancement of science, and it gives conspiracy theorists, the religious right, new agers and other antiintellectuals more ammo.

tl;dr - the part about accolades in the sciences going to those who upset the status quo is a pretty idealized picture of the scientific community, and about as accurate as saying that all police work only toward the best interest of all citizens all the time.

bac - 2013-06-22

*****

Old_Zircon - 2013-06-23

tl;dr 2 - the sciences are as full of douchebags as any other field.

Old_Zircon - 2013-06-21

"Do I trust the government? No! The difference between you and me is I that don't trust the informations I see in internet blogs or videos, either..."

My favorite thing I've ever heard him say.

spikestoyiu - 2013-06-21

For me, the fact that these people hold YouTube videos in the highest regard is really the most fascinating thing. As long as a like minded person puts it all together in a YouTube video full of spooky music, then it's scripture.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2013-06-22

No kidding. "It might say on a major news outlet that X happened, they have pictures, video, sources cited, links to other sources, and explanations from experts and even Wikipedia, but the guy with tin foil on his windows knows it was REALLY the illuminati."

spikestoyiu - 2013-06-22

And, especially in the case of Sandy Hook "truthers", they could never figure out their own relationship with the mass media. Their entire theory was based on erroneous information provided by the media very early on in the game, but when those very same media outlets later corrected themselves, they weren't to be trusted.

Old_Zircon - 2013-06-23

Two years ago a friend of mine found a spot a few miles out of town, in front of a hot dog shop, where if you look straight up in Google Street View there's a weird lens flare that looks like a huge, solid disc flying toward the camera out of a ball of light. I tried pretty hard to convince him to make a video about it and see if we could convince UFO watchers to congregate outside the hot dog stand, but it never happened. I should have done it myself, in retrospect.

StanleyPain - 2013-06-21

HE"S JUST A SHILL FOR BIG PHARMA

kamlem - 2013-06-22

Clearly potholer54 is a rainbow in the storm of the internet. Therefore he's a HAARP shill.

bac - 2013-06-22

Damn, I forgot to submit this, I'm happy someone did.

Vaidency - 2013-06-22

I laughed out loud when he sourced the mysterious picture of the aurora "taken just before the tsunami" as a copy of a poster.
