I wish my mansion was full of whores.

The only Kickstarter I found worthwhile and enjoyed the promotional video for was Ghoul trying to get a new van

Zombie horror Chex.

Everyone zombie board game I've ever tried was good for scoring a bunch of cheap plastic zombie miniatures (if you're into that sort of thing) and not much else. Last Night on Earth, Zombicide, and Zombies!!!

Something about the genre that just begs to settle for mediocrity.

RocketBlender - 2013-06-24

Zombicide is the closest I've seen to a good one, and I have to admit, the minis for that are pretty cool. If you want a decent co-op board game though, Pandemic is still your best bet by a long shot. That game is actually pretty fun.

When it comes to zombies, everything involving them settles for mediocrity. A lot of developers out there have figured out they can churn out a half assed game, and no one will even call you on it because bad AI that gets caught on minor obstacles and can't open a door is 'soooooooo realistic!' in a zombie game, and idiots will shovel money at you hand over fist because your shitty book/game/movie has zombies in it.

I've noticed the few good things that involve zombies (The Last of Us or The Walking Dead (in my opinion, at least what I've seen so far.) are two good examples.) actually go well out of their way to avoid using the term 'zombies' when describing their disaster.

Though not a board game, my friends and I had a lot of fun with The Dead if for nothing else than for the factor of being able to play "What if there was a zombie apocalypse RIGHT NOW and we had to survive on what we have with us at this very moment?"

The problem with most co-op boardgames is one person always ends up "quarterbacking" and pointing out the optimum for everyone, essentially playing for them. You either tell him to shut up or grudgingly follow his advice. Either way it kinda kills the mood.

There's always Arkham Horror if you're up for that monster. Elder Sign is a much lighter version of it (Cthulhu yahtzee basically). Ghost Stories is another fun one inbetween the two.

RocketBlender - 2013-06-25

That can happen from time to time, especially if you get someone in your group that REALLY needs to win to have a good time.

I've never heard of Ghost Stories, I'll have to look that one up.

On another note entirely, Betrayal at the House on the Hill is one of my favorites. It starts out with no goal at all, until enough events happen that a haunt is triggered, at which point one player becomes the traitor in one of 50 scenarios. They might become a werewolf, make voodoo dolls of the other players, open a gate to hell, or so on. The other players have some kind of goal they need to accomplish to stop the traitor's plans as the traitor does everything they can to kill them off before that happens.

It's a lot of fun, especially since you don't know who at your table is going to end up the villain, and generally speaking, is a little lighter on that quarterbacking issue.

EVERY board game session has that guy, even when it is not co-op. If you can't spot that guy in the room, then it is likely you.

I was into Zombies!!! for a bit, but the game becomes a literal mess of little zombies and tiles and shit. I have large ham-fisted hands that wipe out entire blocks of survivors/zombies just trying to pick up an item. Whenever I want zombies in my board games, I now just stick to the Resident Evil deck building game. Then I am satisfied for the next 6 months.

I run a board game night at a local store, and use a webstie called boardgamegeek a lot for looking up info, getting freebies, etc. There's a section on the forums where new companies often give away a few copies of their game. You get one free entry, and then there's a little quiz of 6 questions, each one you get right gives you 2 more entries. The idea is that people will read about the game to get the most entries, and those that don't win will be interested enough to consider buying. For me, unless the game looks really interesting at first glance, I just take shots in the dark and hope for an extra entry or two if I'm still even interested enough to enter.

This one looked especially dull, but I ended up watching the whole thing just because of how bored to tears the marketer sounds with her own game, and the fact that she's clearly never read the description before. I knew I had something submittable when they began to talk about the mod-ehh-yu-lehr game board.

Rewatching this, I really love how many attempts at jump scared the video have, and how the bored out of her skull narrator keeps them from having any impact.

Jet Bin Fever - 2013-06-25

Sort of like a much less clever and much more boring version of Arkham Horror.

"Do you dare enter this darkness? You don't? OK, honestly it doesn't matter to me, I get paid either way."
