I remember seeing a poster for this movie in the textbook for my German language class in 1997/98. I guess it was a theatrical release over there.

Weird, I discovered this by trying to find foreign language versions of Alf and seeing a clip of this dubbed in German. Do Germans have some special love of Alf?
Yes we do! I think ALF was more popular here than in the US. It is also the only show where the dubbing somehow makes it better.
