The 70s and 80s saw their share "nature/animals run amok" horror stories, the "pack of killer dogs" story has been the basis of a couple of cheesy horror novels I've read, the causes ranging from chemical contanimation to influence by supernatural forces. One in particular, that's title eluds my memory, was about what happens when a dog escapes from a laboratory, part of a litter of puppies specially bred for an experiment, to create a more intelligent dog with the unforseen side effect of majorly increased aggression and hyperviolent tendencies, and then while running free begins to "breed" with some regular dogs.

I was out for a walk with my boss and his dog in a state park/forest once. Seemingly out of nowhere, the dog broke free from his leash and sprinted off. We found him neck deep in the corpse of a deer, covered in blood and deer innards. Bambi's mom lay lifeless as the dog tore uncontrollably into her. My boss said he was never able to look at his family pet the same again.

"Feral dogs try to eat Joe Don Baker." I can only imagine this was the actual pitch.
