CJH - 2013-07-08

yeah its just a palette-swapped japanese chick, not a lumbering loudmouthed half-giant

Caminante Nocturno - 2013-07-09

Or a giant, sentient cactus in a sombrero, like in that one Capcom game.

delicatessen - 2013-07-09

Now I wish I had a taco

Nominal - 2013-07-09

Gabe Newell anime?

Gmork - 2013-07-09

THIS IS WHAT THE JAPANESE ACTUALLY BELIEVE

SolRo - 2013-07-09

So when I see an Asian at a sushi restaurant and they say something in Japanese, I'm being racist?

All foreign restaurants in america have to be run and staffed by white guys or it's racism.

Ursa_minor - 2013-07-09

What the fuck are you talking about?

SolRo - 2013-07-09

context

candyheadrobot - 2013-07-09

On one end you're right SolRo, she is singing a song about tacos, which is what she's selling at this particular restaraunt. This could be seen as appropriate in the context of where she's placed and her occupation.

Now: switch her out with a black girl, singing about selling watermelon at a watermelon stand.

A little different yes?

candyheadrobot - 2013-07-09

restaurant^ stupid typos.

SolRo - 2013-07-09

I think black people should start getting offended that they're being used as the yardstick for racism.

candyheadrobot - 2013-07-09

Ah, but you're forgetting the context of food, if you can't see the taco thing, how's the Jewish girl with a latke song gonna make sense? Point being, there's casual race stuff here, that while not horrifically overt, still sorta sucks. Recognition of it helps the yardsticks go away.

SolRo - 2013-07-09

honestly I don't know how Mexican girl advertising Mexican food is the same thing as a black girl advertising watermelons, unless one assumes watermelons are a 'black people' food.

I think you're confusing using a stereotype in advertising versus just a person of some kind of skin color being in advertising.

By that standard any black people working at KFC or Popeyes are uncle toms are they not?

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2013-07-09

My name is HEEEENIFER LOPEZ. I like tacos and burrrrrrrrritos. Taco taco tacos!

Caminante Nocturno - 2013-07-09

If you bend over backwards to get offended any further, you're going to snap in two and then you'll be disabled.

candyheadrobot - 2013-07-09

Nope. In reality when you've got some person of a certain skin color, working at whatever job they're working, that's their job. They've got autonomy to make the decision to work that job, they're gettting compensated for it, and unless you're at Applebee's or something, the only songs you ever sing are happy birthday, and not "boy I"m happy to be sellin you some tacos". I dunno if many people would work a job like that, let alone it attract many customers.

I'm not all that offended by this, I've seen way worse in anime, but the fact that your argument is based on context, I'm really confused as to how something like this makes sense to you.

This isn't some Mexican girl selling tacos at a stand, she's singing a poorly constructed song about a food that's connected with her ethnicity, by which there's no precident set that she's singing the song because she has to, but rather because she just looooves tacos. If that's not low level stereotyping/casual racism, then clearly there was nothing wrong with that Australian guy who made friends with all the black people via a bucket of KFC, or that Debbie spend it now thing.

If you really can't see the context you keep talking about as being important, I can't change your mind, but I'd hope that you think about it a little further in the future. Then again I've got a problem with Million Dollar Extreme's conservative act over Tim Heidecker's, so maybe I am just paying too much attention.

SolRo - 2013-07-09

She's singing a stupid jingle for the Mexican restaurant she owns with her husband there, she's more offensive as an airhead/carefree-pixie woman stereotype than a Mexican stereotype.

candyheadrobot - 2013-07-09

So she owns it, you still see nothing wrong with the picture? I get your argument, "where is the line drawn" and all that, but like I said, I'm not here to convince you, just offering the the context you didn't see. It's cool bro, just 30 seconds of anime. Here's a real debate for you:

http://original-recipe-winnafish.tumblr.com/post/54224625954/s catmancrothers-sparklescrotum

Context: old South Park joke get's turned into racist argument.

STOP TALKING

poopy - 2013-07-09

"I think black people should start getting offended that they're being used as the yardstick for racism." god i love this site and the people on it. poetv forever!

SolRo - 2013-07-09

Wait, it's wrong for a Mexican to own a restaurant?

Jet Bin Fever - 2013-07-09

I had some of the best Mexican food (quality wise) in my life at a place in Ikebukuro. They also had little plastic taco stands so that the tacos stood up and didn't get soggy and nasty. Japan is very advanced.

Caminante Nocturno - 2013-07-09

I've seen this anime, it's pretty good. It gets weird and abstract at the end, though.

The title had me expecting the woman from Excel Saga who rolls the Hell out of every single 'r' she utters.
