after looking at any comment section on the internet today, this is not amazing at all

I've said it before and I'll say it again: if George Zimmerman had stalked a white teen named "Travis Martin" just for not recognizing him, there isn't a person in the country who would support him. In fact it wouldn't have been national news, except maybe in "News of the Weird".

Binro the Heretic - 2013-07-14

Zimmerman would never have stalked a white kid, not even if he saw one carrying a flat screen TV.

His goal was to make black people feel uncomfortable and unwanted in "his" neighborhood.

baleen - 2013-07-14

A good friend of mine's boss lived in Zimmermann's neighborhood and said that he saw him driving around without a shirt looking for crimes to fight. He was a sketchy dude. I think the problems for the Z are only just beginning, especially now that he's got this child molestation thing in the air.

My ideal: The Martins have a Kickstarter campaign to fund the civil court suit on wrongful death charges or something similar. Then Zimmermann's could have a kickstarter campaign. It would be a horrible spectacle.

They broke that poor old man's heart.

He really thought he'd thwarted a black guy.

Seriously, though, I see shit like this all the time around here. It's kind of fun, watching a group of white people go silent and snap to attention when some black kid happens to walk within fifty yards of them. It's kind of like watching those nature documentaries when a herd of gazelle leap back from a waterhole when they see a crocodile cruising in the water except the crocodile is on his way someplace else and doesn't give a shit about the gazelle.

It's why I was disgusted, but not very surprised by the Zimmerman verdict.

memedumpster - 2013-07-14

Counterpoint : I sat with a .44 to my head all day due to this verdict, and have just now decided to live.

Bort - 2013-07-14

I like to hope you're joking, memedumpster. If so, ya got me!

If you need any further encouragement to keep going, consider this: it sometimes takes a clear travesty of justice for people to start getting their shit together. This verdict is going to be revisited over and over, and the Zimmerman supporters aren't going to look any better for supporting a clear racist lunatic.

As of now, George Zimmerman is the most hated Hispanic in America, eclipsing even Ariel Castro. That takes some doing.

memedumpster - 2013-07-14

This wouldn't have gone to trial had the FBI not investigated the police for possibly covering up a hate crime, due to public outcry.
Like every public outcry in the 21st century, this was met with an identical outcome to having no outcry at all.

Today, I was just tired of doing the Cry Walk. You said there'd be beer, and there was, and now there isn't, so I'm going to leave.

Don't touch Cloud Chaser.

Three possible outcomes to be hopeful about:

1) Dr. Marissa Alexander. Ever heard of her before today? Most people haven't, but this could result in her case being reviewed.

2) The allegations of sexual abuse against Zimmerman; the cousin he allegedly abused said that she wouldn't have come forward except that now she's not scared of him. Well, today maybe she's scared again, but even so, Zimmerman may be brought to justice for that.

3) I still say this exposes racism in this country on a level that wasn't quite so visible before. Prior to this it was real easy for lots of people to say "I'm not racist, I like Tim Meadows just fine." Well, now we have a clearer indicator of racism, and I do think it's up to white guys like me to start calling people on it, make it harder for the racism to hide.

Bort - 2013-12-05

Update: Marissa Alexander's conviction was overturned a few weeks after the Zimmerman verdict. She's getting a retrial, so she's not out of the woods yet, but the outcry from the Zimmerman trial certainly brought her conviction under scrutiny, and it's unlikely they'll be able to sweep her under the carpet again like some sort of irrelevant minority.

Old_Zircon - 2013-07-14

The worst part is that nothing in this is even slightly surprising.

The God of Biscuits - 2013-07-14

This is all very shocking, given that we're in a post-racial society.

Jet Bin Fever - 2013-07-15

Duh.
