"..the publicity that comes with being a contrarian". The new social mantra.

The God of Biscuits - 2013-07-22

I'm out of the loop apparently, who is this Hedges guy and why are three of his videos on the frontpage?

kingarthur - 2013-07-22

A socialist Christian and former war correspondent who is pretty spot on in his analysis but terribly fatalistic much of the time.

simon666 - 2013-07-22

Well, he's spot on if your beliefs have genealogical roots in, adhere to, or conform to boilerplate post-colonial, post-modern critiques of the West, reason, etc., etc.

StanleyPain - 2013-07-22

It's interesting to see the difference between people who can disagree with and criticize Hitchens on things and then people who have to mis-represent his views in order to SOUND like they have some kind of substantive criticism of him.
Sounds kinda like sour grapes from getting your ass handed to you in a debate with him, but whatevs....

Eroticus E - 2013-07-22

Hedges is a sanctimonious cunt.

Maru - 2013-07-22

I agree, but he's right about Hitchens. Hitchens didn't have beliefs; he had poses.

Aelric - 2013-07-22

So was Hitchens. For all I agreed with Hitchens, I never once liked Hitchens nor thought that he was progressing anything other than counter-dogma, effectively being the thing he claims to hate. Add that to the thinly veiled ethnic cleansing of the Arabian nations that he and others support in the hopes to rid the world of Islam with preemptive strikes and I would take a moderate or socialist christian over an atheist, classist asshole any day.

kingarthur - 2013-07-22

I submitted three Hedges videos just to see who was going to come oh and bash Hedges. I was not disappointed.

drcrypt - 2013-07-22

What a cunning plan. You've truly mastered the manipulation of of PoETV's social engine. I hope your machinations are studied in detail in future scholarly works.

memedumpster - 2013-07-22

I voted them all up for the same reason. It totally worked.

kingarthur - 2013-07-23

It wasn't so much cunning as a simple roll the ball towards the general area of the pins and profit.

He brings up a good point about how Hitchens used his own flavor of secularist speech to support his ideas on why the conflicts in the middle east are justified and how he separated the world into "us and them". But it's not because Hitchens was arguing against a "caricature" of religion, he represented religion pretty accurately in my opinion; though he certainly wasn't the best at debating against the finer points of Christian apologetics.

The Glenn Greenwald article titled "Sam Harris, the New Atheists, and anti-Muslim animus" helps to articulate what I think is Hedges' general message: atheists like Hitchens and Harris don't care who or what they support as long as it is in line with their political beliefs - their political beliefs have superseded their convictions as atheists, rationalists, secularists and even humanists. I would characterize it as this: their political beliefs are their fundamentalism - it has nothing to do with being a secularist or atheist - and they'll use all the tools in their intellectual arsenal to see their political vision succeed and ally with even their worst enemies.

"But it's not because Hitchens was arguing against a 'caricature' of religion, he represented religion pretty accurately in my opinion"

Okay, but bear in mind that Hitchens' atheism led him to siding with the US in its Middle Eastern wars, so he could strike a blow at Islam. And if meant killing a few hundred thousand innocent people, well, they were just Muslims, weren't they?

My point: whatever arguments Hitchens wanted to make about religion causing human misery, he proved in spades that an atheist can do just as well. So maybe religion isn't the problem so much as a willingness to dehumanize other people to get one's way.

Spaceman Africa - 2013-07-22

Sam Harris' website confused me. First he started with some logical arguments about how Islam is no sacred cow when it comes to movie mockery, then he spirals all the way to defending waterboarding and praising Israel.
