I watched this show called "How the Universe Works" expecting it to be interesting. Compared to Cosmos, it was dumbed-down dull nonsense. Maybe TV producers' expectations of the intelligence of their audience has changed in the 30 years since Cosmos came out, but it was terrible.
I REALLY hope that in the spirit of Sagan, NDT makes this fun, insightful, and intelligent in equal portions. I have high hopes for it, and I hope I'm not disappointed.

Ocyrus - 2013-07-22

Saw that too, it was terrible. So repetitive and unwatchable.

SolRo - 2013-07-22

"How The Universe Works" is pretty decent, especially compared to recent trends on 'educational' channels.

memedumpster - 2013-07-22

I fear this movie. If it's terrible, I wont survive viewing it.

StanleyPain - 2013-07-22

It's going to be a mini-series. Probably about 10-12 episodes, same as the original Cosmos. I'm looking forward to this (and did you know that, of all people, Seth MacFarlaine put most of his production company's money into this?), but I'm worried it might lack the quiet dignity of the original series in favor of a lot of IN YOUR FACE, THIS AIN'T YO DADDYS SCIENCE kind of bullshit.

memedumpster - 2013-07-22

Seeing MacFarlaine's name just put this into the "will watch when someone I trust says it doesn't suck ass" category.

StanleyPain - 2013-07-22

I think he knows that people see his name and basically think "moron" because he's gone to great lengths to stress that he had nothing whatsoever to do with the shows creation...he just paid for it because basically no major network was willing to take the show on and he believed in it and figured he could get Fox to broadcast it (which they are). So...I hate MacFarlaine too, but the show itself was made by Sagan's widow, Tyson, and other people who are pretty legit.

memedumpster - 2013-07-22

I'll trust your opinion, and if you say it's good, I'll check it out. At least with poeTV, I don't get the watered down "eh, it wasn't bad, here let's watch it, oh I lied it sucks and I have no standards" bullshit I get from real life.

It was pretty okay but not nearly as information-packed as the original series. They spent more time talking about the people behind the science than the science itself, and spent a LOT of time on fancy CG effects to demonstrate things.

Still, I loved seeing peoples' reactions to the show and the inspiration that they got form it.

SolRo - 2013-07-22

Sounds like the soundtrack from Sunshine, which is cool but kinda worrying if its an indicator of science content.

Mother_Puncher - 2013-07-22

ARE YOU READY TO HAVE YOUR PATHETIC MINDS BLOWN AWAY BY THESE FUCKING GRAPHICS?

chumbucket - 2013-07-22

Better have Vangelis.

HarrietTubmanPI - 2013-07-22

Agreed. Or a mix of Vangelis, maybe Philip Glass would work, Wendy/Walter Carlos, or even Jean Michel Jarre.

The original had Bach, Mahler, and even Vivaldi, too. That would be nice to mix that, maybe even Goldberg Variations performed by Gould?

I have no input into this, though.

gravelstudios - 2013-07-23

Holst. Don't forget Holst. And Beethoven's 7th was fairly prominent. I really hope this doesn't suck.

unknown specimen - 2013-07-23

In an ideal world this will lead to more science books being turned into documentaries. In an ideal world Seth Macfarlain isn't the only one who's smart enough to realize that we needed a show like this a decade ago.

WHO WANTS DESSERT - 2013-07-23

I never thought The Asylum would make a knockoff of Terrence Malik's The Tree of Life
