This is actually really interesting.

WHO WANTS DESSERT - 2013-07-24

Any English teacher who doesn't know that slang and dialect are legitimate parts of language shouldn't be teaching.

WHO WANTS DESSERT - 2013-07-24

also, linguistic prescriptivism can eat a dick

Jet Bin Fever - 2013-07-24

I didn't hear any slang in that lesson. He just addressed common grammatical mistakes, not slang. Sure, language structure evolves over time, but bad grammar and writing really limits the individual. I don't know why you're so upset about teaching some smart kids how to sound as smart as they really are.

unknown specimen - 2013-07-24

It's kind of like teaching Roman children (or Gaulish children as the case may be) the difference between Vulgar Latin and Formal Latin. I'm all about there being lots of Vulgar (in the original sense of the word) forms of English but I think that we should have a formal version of the tongue for everyday communications.

Although you are entirely right about Linguistic prescriptivism.

Nobody here is saying dialects are illegitimate, it's just that if you actually believe it's acceptable to go into an interview without any of the proper prepositions or you are dropping indicatives than you're not going to get the job, but if you happen to get the job, you probably won't be getting paid what you deserve.

The young applicant will scratch their heads and go, "Why I ain't gettin no job in an office?" and might blame it on their race, which might play a factor, but not being able to speak English in an excessively dialectical form could be as much to blame.

There's plenty of room for both. It's not like they're being sent to elocution school in Victorian England or something.

Old_Zircon - 2013-07-24

Right, but the fact that this program even needed/needs to exist is that saying dialects are illegitimate is kind of the default stance in schools.

Gmork - 2013-07-24

Forgetting words like "Is" and "the" does not equal slang. It is incorrect English. Southern speech is dialectic. Kind of a big difference. Although, they forget some pertinent article words as well.

memedumpster - 2013-07-24

Those dirty brown barbarians and their dirt-tongue aren't good enough for my foreigner manned factory! If I'm going to hear animals making noises on my floors, it better be a language that sounds nothing like mine, because God made mine His Tongue!

Language is fascinating until humans shit all over each other for it, ensuring no one learns fuck about shit for dick.

Comrade Admiral - 2013-07-24

Gmork, shut the fuck up, you don't know shit about linguistics.

First of all, vernacular is not slang. Vernacular is native language, typically a localized, "home" variety. Slang is isolated lexemes that exist within the language, and slang is everywhere there is slang in both standard and nonstandard varieties of every single language in the world.

Second of all, this isn't a matter of "forgetting" functional categories like articles, prepositions, or case agreement. Certain elements, particularly those that don't encode essential or semantic information are dropped from language, and the opposite is also true, languages acquire semantically-null detritus all the time. Think about the English language and our use of the auxiliary verb "do", a category that no other Germanic language, and almost no other language in the world even bothers with.

For you to dismiss this out of hand as laziness, stupidity, or anything other than a universal linguistic imperative to optimize just shows your ignorance. How the hell do you even think we got to this point, speaking this mangled, bastardized variety of an Old Norse-lexified Creole?

It sure as hell wasn't by encouraging your dumb ideas about linguistic purity or correctness.

Mister Yuck - 2013-07-24

Awesome.

If you don't have a racist relative, you may need to bone up a bit on this:

It was also fodder for every shitty B list comedian and morning radio personality for a year or two.

They should teach them obnoxious Oxford accents, to really fuck with stereotypes and phone interviews
