I think you guys have helped me get over my issues with vanity nerds.

I've always felt a kind of kinship with nerds, even though I probably wouldn't classify myself as one, because most of my friends are/were nerds, and I like unpopular things, and nerds have a pretty remarkable level of courage to like something that will cause them to be ostracized. So, vanity-nerds would piss me off because the most important part of being a nerd, to me, is having to have gone through that suffering, and it's pretty clear to me that vanity-nerds are neither being ostracized (in fact, they're doing it to be popular) nor have any real interest in elves or computer science or the nuances of the various different DC universes.

However, you guys take the anger to such an extreme that I'm unable to go to that I think I've just come to peace with the whole thing. So, thanks.

Considering that "geek" culture now seems to incorporate anyone who's into movies, books, comic books, video games, costumes, sculpture, science, sports, computers, or communicating with any form of electronic device whatsoever, people who self-identify as "geeks" seem to be doing so as a codeword for "I am deeply insecure" moreso than any functional description.

It's not so much PEOPLE ARE INTO POPULAR THINGS as...well it comes in a variety of flavors, from the THE PARTICULAR SUBSET OF MEDIA I CONSUME ON A REGULAR BASIS IS A SIGN OF HOW MUCH OF A WACKY QUIRKY CREATIVE SOUL AM I attitude to the sobfests about how OH GOD THESE FAKE GEEKS HOW DARE THEY ENJOY THE SAME THINGS I DO WHEN THEY HAVEN'T FELT THE PAIN WE TRUE GEEKS ARE ALL CHARLIE BROWN BOO HOO SOB

It has nothing to do with "popular." it has to do with people who so badly want to a pre-made LOL RANDOM personality that they immediately adopt all the same so-called "nerd" shit that every other generic person is into. it doesn't get me mad or any of that other strawman argument bullshit. I'm a geek about plenty of shit. I have handmade Hellboy buttons on my messenger bag. I have unofficial Twin Peaks tshirts I got off etsy or something like that. And don't even get me started on MST3k. But it's not really my personality and I don't use it as some weird crutch to define my life. It's also things I legitimately enjoy and have passions for, not things that I saw on IGN or some shit that everyone pretends to like to be part of the club. I grew up on Doctor Who...watched the show most of my life. Personally, I don't care for the new series, but whatever, I don't begrudge people who like it per se. But it kind of bugs when these manufactured "nerd" types put down people who are legitimately into things that fall outside this "pre-approved" culture nonsense. I know people who literally are so crippled by their addiction to this kind of nonsense they won't watch, play, or listen to anything that doesn't have at least 2 or 3 internet memes attached to it or that hasn't been mentioned on Attack of the Show or some shit.

This thing really isn't about her, it's about the comic book scholars, the geek gamer girl with a youtube partnership, and all of these other vapid husks that meandered into science fiction out of fomo. Punk had Green Day, nerd has the Avengers movie. None of this stuff is the result of a genuine investment, just profiteers going after one part of the market or another. Does it matter in the long run? Sorta, in the sense that independent creators (specifically in comics since the problem is Hollywood here) don't usually go far without some mainstream support. The comic fan dollar isn't as long as the glut of these people, who establish and solidify trends, why else is there a Deadpool game? That trend will be followed by those companies, and for likely worse, we'll see a lot more Loki comics and not very many originals unless created by those already well established in the biz, shoring up the entertainment and employment. In the meantime, these people get all excited about a character (or actor depending) from the worst girl talk adaptation of comic to film showing up in hall H, and vlog about it for the purpose of...?
