Apologies to Caminante Nocturno, who posted the movie's opening. The video's poster posted the entire movie in bizarrely small parts, and this full version was posted a little over a year ago.

Here's the review: web.archive.org/web/20110525131844/http://www.filmfreakcentral.net /dvdreviews/americanrabbit.htm

There are certain flaws with this film.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2013-07-28

In the first few minutes, I'm hard pressed to figure out where America keeps its mountain village with thatched roofs.

Not to mention that these rabbits seem to keep half their body mass in their ears.

"[Well,] after seeing this all the way through [I] can certainly understand how a kid who loved this film in the late 80's would grow up to make a webcomic featuring a cross between pikachu and sonic that goes nowhere."

—YouTube commenter shawtgunjones, upon watching this film.

Old_Zircon - 2013-07-28

So is this movie the Gaëtan Dugas of furry or what?

fulakarp - 2013-07-29

Stars for you

blase - 2013-07-28

This movie was based on a graphic design poster, IIRC. http://www.smoskowitz.com/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=349

themilkshark - 2013-07-28

That makes this even worse.

Xenagama Warrior Princess - 2013-07-28

Holy shit. I almost forgot about this artist.

I remember growing up in the mid 90s that there used to be tons of his pictures for sale. I believe we have some of them, framed and numbered that are collecting dust somewhere in our storage room.

Hailey2006 - 2013-08-01

They used to have this poster at the roller rink!

themilkshark - 2013-07-28

Why do some folks passionately respond to incredibly lazy cartoon character design?

Old_Zircon - 2013-07-28

Probably the same reason the respond to incredibly lazy everything else, from politics to cooking.

I don't know what it is either, though.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2013-07-28

It's not the design so much as the dialog. Even in the first few minutes, note how many lines are completely unnecessary or just repetition of the line that came right before it.

I don't think an editor could've saved this mess, but some kind of streamlining would have at least made it shorter.

The New Meat - 2013-07-28

As an American, I find this highly offensive.

Binro the Heretic - 2013-07-28

I've never heard of this movie before, but back when I was in middle school we had a fundraising thing where kids could buy stuff with these characters on them. I didn't order any because it was all trite, callow bullshit.

However, it was the 1980s, so it was perfectly acceptable for someone to base a cartoon off random characters created to sell overpriced posters & stationary in hopes it would increase sales of said shit.

So the fact this movie was made doesn't surprise me. It sort of pisses me off that they seem to have gotten some real talent to do the voices like Barry Gordon and Lorenzo Music.

The 1980s were a dark and horrible time.

Zaku-sensei - 2013-07-28

jeez who did the animation for this, it looks way too good for the material. Some poor Japanese studio I bet, like TMS, having to do this crap cause it pays so well when they'd much rather be doing Ghostbusters episodes or some fighting robot anime for their own market. poor bastards.

Nikon - 2013-07-28

It was Toei. Araki Shingo worked as part of the staff on it. The artist who created the character managed to get advertisements for Suntory beverages and Japan Air Lines as well.

memedumpster - 2013-07-28

Drunken Garfield Gorilla is five stars.

sasazuka - 2013-07-28

When the American flag appears in the background while he's running during his transformation sequence, you hear the same few notes that the Montreal Metro's electric motors make when they pull out of a station. Hard to explain, but here's a video of it to show what I mean:

Nikon - 2013-07-28

I thought I heard the Superman theme playing in the background while the rabbit was flying.

Macho Nacho - 2013-07-28

Jesus, I have vague memories of watching this in the summer as a kid when it played on Disney.

Nikon - 2013-07-28

I saw it as a lad at the dollar theatre.

Caminante Nocturno - 2013-07-28

The music in this movie sounds so depressed and half-hearted, like it knows it's in something bad and can't even pretend otherwise.

Hailey2006 - 2013-08-01

and it was written by Flo and Eddie from the Turtles/Mothers of Invention, I would expect better from them or maybe not!

yogarfield - 2014-01-22

i've had this VHS for years. two words: pussy magnet.
