"MONEY IN YOUR POCKET... OR JOB KILLER?"

Thanks CNN.

kamlem - 2013-07-31

Currently, in Australia, the full-time minimum wage is .37 per hour or 2.20 per week. It's a horrific wasteland filled with tumbleweeds where noble fast food outlets and department stores once stood.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2013-08-01

Australia has the number one economy in the world for median incomes.

The US is now number 27.

Monkey Napoleon - 2013-07-31

In Oregon, we passed a law in 03 that raises the minimum wage yearly based off of inflation. Taking into account the national unemployment spike from the economic crisis, it's been going down ever since. Minimum wage is currently at .95 here.

Monkey Napoleon - 2013-07-31

The unemployment rate has been going down, that is.

baleen - 2013-07-31

There is an economics institute that polls a thousand or so economists a year on the minimum wage. In the 1970's, about 70% of the economists polled thought it would damage employment, with the remainder divided between the minimum wage having a benefit to the poor in America and it having no effect whatsoever.

Recently, the same poll found a stark contrast to those results. It is now evenly distributed, with about 1/3 each believing that it is positive, negative, or has no effect at all.

The economist featured here seems more interested in political punditry than actually discussing negative impacts of minimum wage. This is acceptable from a politician, but not from someone who appears on national television as a scholar.

SolRo - 2013-07-31

Set congesses pay to an hourly low fixed multiple of the minimum wage and watch that shit get raised on a monthly basis.

Monkey Napoleon - 2013-07-31

My money would be more on "watch government corruption unfold on unprecedented scales."

SolRo - 2013-07-31

Oh Monkey, you're so innocent I just want to hug you and protect you from the world.

Monkey Napoleon - 2013-07-31

Oh, I'm sure it's bad now. That times a bajillion.

SolRo - 2013-07-31

Multiplying infinity doesn't make infinity bigger

Monkey Napoleon - 2013-07-31

See... my joke is that raising the minimum wage is too much of an accomplishment, helps too many other people, and is far too much of a concentrated effort for them to be interested in actually doing it.

They'd find a way to supplement their incomes, and we wouldn't benefit from it at all.

Screwtape - 2013-07-31

That'll show all those millionaires in congress!

Seriously, congressional salaries are their beer money.

giygusattack - 2013-07-31

Yep, just good solid debate here. Pat yourself on the back some more Blitzer.

Binro the Heretic - 2013-07-31

The threat to fire people if the minimum wage goes up is a hollow one. Companies these days are really good at wringing the most work they can out of every employee. They don't have "extra" people sitting around who can be fired. If you let them go, your productivity suffers.

Binro the Heretic - 2013-07-31

Oops. That was meant to be a reply to CIWB below.

Sorry.

memedumpster - 2013-08-01

There were mass firings when Obama got reelected, purely out of hatred and revenge for anyone who might have voted for him. We are a species which would eradicate the entire earth with Satan's feces to get revenge on feeling bad due to a few people.

CIWB - 2013-07-31

These conversations always include someone saying "If minimum wage increases, then companies will stop hiring workers." As if it would be the government's fault that these companies are so cartoonishly greedy that they simply can't operate without an astronomical profit margin.

Wal-Mart has already honed its production and distribution to perfection. There's nowhere left to cut on the product side, so all they have left to do to ensure higher profit margins every year is to cut back on employees and their already horrible salary.

Or just be satisfied with billions and billions in pure profit they would make even with a larger, higher paid workforce.

Nah, that's crazy.

Toenails - 2013-07-31

What about Burger King or McDonalds? I mean, according to this douche-nut, they are barely making a dime!

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2013-07-31

It's funny how many immensely profitable corporations are able to rig their books so that they appear to not make a profit when they want taxes lowered, but who are making huge bank when it comes to paying their CEOs and touting their stock to investors.

I really think we're headed for a pretty big catastrophe for the average American. Sadly, they'll starve or wallow in poverty still under the delusion that they need to lower corporate taxes because they, themselves, will someday be rich rather than unable to feed themselves.

Deplorable - 2013-07-31

Why don't we pay them even less? Why don't we not pay them at all? If the wage is zero then everyone can get a job, and unemployment will be zero! Walmart sells food, they can pay them with that. They're on their own with that healthcare shit though.

Congratulations, I just solved the economy for you. You're welcome.

Cockmaster Flash - 2013-07-31

Have you ever considered working for the Heritage Foundation?

Cockmaster Flash - 2013-07-31

The only thing that has surprised me this year about the minimum wage "debate" is that the House hasn't tried to repeal it yet.

TheSupafly - 2013-07-31

I used to be somewhat against, but mostly indifferent towards minimum wage, considering it a bandage and yadda yadda, but then I eventually actually saw the statistical re-occuring effects of it over the past half century and there really is nothing to argue against other than keeping it away from a crazy number like 25/hr. And we can do it while avoiding any emotion appeal to the uninsured poor too.

The one drawback that can't be denied is that yes it does increase the rate of inflation, but not nearly at the rate that it increases economic and small business growth. The little guys are forced to increase their prices to make a profit, but are also forced to hire more because of the increase demand from consumers (so much for that). It does hurt the really giant businesses that keep their profist so high due to cheap labor and the greater competition from a healthier small business market.

Or maybe we could avoid all that and stick to the one statistic about teen jobs we could find, or emotional appeals that evil people can easily rationalize away.

Binro the Heretic - 2013-07-31

The real reason prices go up along with the minimum wage is because businesses know their customers have more money.

Old_Zircon - 2013-07-31

The farther right someone is politically, the more their mouth looks like a dog anus. FACT.

jangbones - 2013-07-31

some day, cable news will be charged with crimes against humanity

memedumpster - 2013-07-31

The fact that there's an argument against paying people more money in a country where the super rich have all power just shows how irredeemably stupid we all are.

Binro the Heretic - 2013-07-31

How about a "maximum" wage? How about we cut these wealth addicts off like drunks at a bar?

"No more raking in millions until you finish spending the millions you already have."

Deplorable - 2013-07-31

But then they will fire everyone. Just out of pure spite. If I can't make money, no one makes money!

Jet Bin Fever - 2013-08-01

I love that idea. They should have rules like some responsible companies where the highest earning person makes only a certain percentage of the person at the very very bottom.

betabox - 2013-08-01

That was the idea behind having a 70-90% tax bracket for high wage-earners. Executives and stockholders were given a big incentive to roll profits back into their companies and communities.

This was beneficial to employees, the economy, and the country, so we replaced it with Trickle Down Economics.

Blue - 2013-07-31

Corporations employ as few people as they can get away with to serve their customers. A minimum wage increase would allow the people that actually create jobs - the fucking customers - to do so. Also, all those job hogs could actually afford to quit their second and third jobs and let someone else have a turn.

Nominal - 2013-08-01

Yeah that's one factor that doesn't get brought up enough. Do people like the dochetwat in this clip honestly think companies would double their workforce if the minimum wage was cut i half?

No, they'd continue to employ the bare minimum and just funnel the extra to the top.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2013-08-01

asks the question "Should Walmart pay its employees more and give them benefits?"

Smirking Asshole: (refuses to answer)

Gmork - 2013-08-01

HOLY FUCKING GOD KILL THE LESS OLD ONE
