Currently, in Australia, the full-time minimum wage is .37 per hour or 2.20 per week. It's a horrific wasteland filled with tumbleweeds where noble fast food outlets and department stores once stood.

In Oregon, we passed a law in 03 that raises the minimum wage yearly based off of inflation. Taking into account the national unemployment spike from the economic crisis, it's been going down ever since. Minimum wage is currently at .95 here.

Set congesses pay to an hourly low fixed multiple of the minimum wage and watch that shit get raised on a monthly basis.

These conversations always include someone saying "If minimum wage increases, then companies will stop hiring workers." As if it would be the government's fault that these companies are so cartoonishly greedy that they simply can't operate without an astronomical profit margin.

Wal-Mart has already honed its production and distribution to perfection. There's nowhere left to cut on the product side, so all they have left to do to ensure higher profit margins every year is to cut back on employees and their already horrible salary.

Or just be satisfied with billions and billions in pure profit they would make even with a larger, higher paid workforce.

Nah, that's crazy.

Why don't we pay them even less? Why don't we not pay them at all? If the wage is zero then everyone can get a job, and unemployment will be zero! Walmart sells food, they can pay them with that. They're on their own with that healthcare shit though.

The only thing that has surprised me this year about the minimum wage "debate" is that the House hasn't tried to repeal it yet.

I used to be somewhat against, but mostly indifferent towards minimum wage, considering it a bandage and yadda yadda, but then I eventually actually saw the statistical re-occuring effects of it over the past half century and there really is nothing to argue against other than keeping it away from a crazy number like 25/hr. And we can do it while avoiding any emotion appeal to the uninsured poor too.

The one drawback that can't be denied is that yes it does increase the rate of inflation, but not nearly at the rate that it increases economic and small business growth. The little guys are forced to increase their prices to make a profit, but are also forced to hire more because of the increase demand from consumers (so much for that). It does hurt the really giant businesses that keep their profist so high due to cheap labor and the greater competition from a healthier small business market.

Or maybe we could avoid all that and stick to the one statistic about teen jobs we could find, or emotional appeals that evil people can easily rationalize away.

The fact that there's an argument against paying people more money in a country where the super rich have all power just shows how irredeemably stupid we all are.

How about a "maximum" wage? How about we cut these wealth addicts off like drunks at a bar?

Corporations employ as few people as they can get away with to serve their customers. A minimum wage increase would allow the people that actually create jobs - the fucking customers - to do so. Also, all those job hogs could actually afford to quit their second and third jobs and let someone else have a turn.
