It still astonishes me that fans of the Nazis consider themselves the most patriotic of Americans. I can follow the trainwreck of thought that can take you there, but personally I can't get past that unpleasantness from 1941 to 1945.

Then again, among the brave young men who fought Hitler you will find the middle aged racist assholes who turned the hoses on Civil Rights marchers, so maybe I have no business being astonished. You fight Hitler because the country's at war; you love what Hitler stood for because the heart wants what the heart wants.

Nazis were very patriotic. I would argue patriotism leads to bad behavior far more than good. You get ten thousand Nazis for every Lincoln.

Bill O'Reilly fascinates me, because he CAN be intelligent and likable in a "grumpy uncle" way. But like many FOX personalities, he's smart enough to know that his job relies on pandering, and years of slightly exaggerating or simplifying his views have probably made him more like his "character" than he'd like to admit.

In the 21st Century, every racist and every misogynist is obsessed with "equality", which is a kind of progress, I guess, but this is where you get the school of logic that says "I can threaten women with rape because I sometimes threaten men with rape."

It's pretty amazing progress, when you think about it. When even hardcore bigots feel guilty if they don't at least pay lip service to liberal egalitarian ideals, you know we got under their skin.
