So ,let me get this straight. As a nobody, you were able to pull in the modest budget required to make Clerks, but now as someone who has made multi-million dollar Hollywood movies, written for DC comics, and basically gets paid obscene money just to show up and talk to your fans for an hour, you can't put together a derivative, boring, bland, sequel to your own movie anymore without financial backing from a studio?
HOW INDIE.

Old_Zircon - 2013-08-11 Lack of budget protected him from himself.
|
Old_Zircon - 2013-08-11 Also the good parts of Clerks were obviously based on real people or experiences.

is he getting thinner or are his shirts growing too large even for the obese?

Wasn't this guy saying a couple years ago that he was done with movies? Wasn't he saying that Red State was his industry swan-song?

BHWW - 2013-08-11 Expecting consistency from Kevin Smith? Ha ha ha ha ha

Those BLIND Smith fans. Just sitting there SMILING, like they're having a GOOD TIME and are all HAPPY to be at COMICON.

Monkey Napoleon - 2013-08-11 Yes, because clearly... having an opinion and being critical of someone means you're unemployed.
Most people just have the decency to find another line of work if what they produce is consistently mediocre.
|
Chancho - 2013-08-12 By work I meant "creative work".
If you watch enough movies you'll realise that what you consider mediocre is very, very difficult to do. 99.99999% of the people trying to do what Kevin Smith does (consistently well) fail miserably. I'm not a huge fan of his work overall, but I still respect his talent and production skills.

American Standard - 2013-08-11
Never understood what people saw in his work.
That's not hipster hindsight, either. I've been subjected to more than one much-too-long nerdsplaining marathon by people I barely fucking knew, convinced they could talk me into considering Chasing Amy genius.

I've never got the Clerks love. The writing is alright, but the acting is woeful. And I know they were basically amateurs, but they must have seen enough films to know that you take a breath between the guy saying his line and you saying yours.
|
FABIO - 2013-08-11 Clerks came out at exactly the right time. It was most people's first exposure to post modern observational humor right when it was starting to form but before the internet made it common place.

DavidBowiesLuckyTennisBall - 2013-08-12 I do appreciate it as a cultural landmark, to use a twatphrase. A breakout, made for almost no money, with a unique sense of humour and the Tarantino-esque conversations about Star Wars - plus the 'my girlfriend sucked 37 dicks' was great. I want to like it more than I do. But as a movie going experience, and ignoring all the context, the acting keeps throwing me out of the otherwise immersive qualities.
|
Nominal - 2013-08-12 Yeah the Star Wars conversation scene sums up the appeal of Clerks in a nutshell. That scene was amazingly brilliant and original in 1994, as was Tarantino's similar scenes.
Nowadays? There's dozens of flash movies of the same material uploaded to youtube every hour.

My total apathy for this dude and his overrated body of work transformed into disdain after reading his piece of shit book.

I didn't even know Clerks 3 was up for consideration. This pleases me.
And Kevin Smith is still adorable. :3
