I was checking her facebook page this afternoon and most on her friends list are fellow Scientologists. Looking at their likes it seems there is a whole subset of Scilons that are also Ron Paul 'libertarian" and far right sovereign citizen anti-government types . Of course Hubbard was pretty much in the paranoid right wing camp himself but I wasn't aware that the modern cult members kept that tradition alive. With their recent connections to the Nation of Islam and now this you have to wonder just where the ideology of the "most ethical people on the planet" is on the political scale. It's also interesting that the mainstream press seems to be ignoring the Scientology connection.

What gets me is they have no respect for laws and law enforcement, but they were going to set up their own laws and law enforcement against these kidnapped cops. A typical hallmark of what I lovingly call "animal revolution" or violent overthrow of power without thought or plan for improvement. Ushering in a new child-ape-kingdom of their very own based on their sovereign stupidity.

Sometimes the revolution is worse than the reason for revolting. Most countries that have a power shift suffer from weakened infrastructure for a long time after.

I interpret the legalese and the violence as different expressions of a big clot of "my individual rights are absolute and no force on earth may limit them".

Individual rights are garbage. Civil rights are a much better thing, because instead of forming around what I want, they form around what is fair for me AND the other guy. Almost all the time, it's possible to find some sort of limit to my rights that allows the other guy to do his thing, without really keeping me from getting my work done too.

Earlier in this thread I feigned surprise over how they're white, because it takes a crazy level of entitlement to feel that traffic laws are a violation of your God-given rights. Few minorities are so well off in this society that their biggest gripe is traffic laws.

What the fuck is a sovereign citizen? I thought we were all living in a sovereign nation?

People who think that, because they never actually agreed to abide by this country's laws, they aren't subject to them.

Not trying to start a row with you Gmork, but when people speak of gun rights in absolute or near-absolute terms, I get the same sense from them as I do these people: their individual rights are so inviolable that their impact on others doesn't even factor into their thinking. I'm not saying that every such gun owner is a Sovereign Citizen or comparably violent, but I see them as candidates to go that direction. But show me a gun owner who agrees that there should be some limits on gun ownership because the other guy deserves his safety too, and we're at least able to speak the same language. I'm not demanding that you defend your position on guns by the way, just telling you where I'm coming from.

There does seem to be a massive sense of entitlement to the Sovereign Citizen movement. I first learned about them when they were moving into foreclosed or abandoned houses and setting up permanent living arrangements. And when told they had to leave, they'd produce tons of papers, demanding payment in gold or silver (cause that's the only 'real' money) and generally bogging down the process with their mystical law skills.

I do find it telling the houses they moved into weren't in quiet, modest neighborhoods. They were almost always huge million dollar homes in prime areas. Not a humble group.
