Fun fact: the real Patch Adams hates this movie.

Funner fact: everyone hates this movie

Jack Dalton - 2013-09-10

When I was applying for jobs in high school, the hiring manager put Patch Adams on a tv and said, "everyone... I invite you to watch my favorite movie--Patch Adams." I quickly left and took it as a sign not to take the job. Other applicants stayed behind in an attempt to kiss his ass. I never saw any of them again.

They all died from trying to laugh away sickness.

Sanest Man Alive - 2013-09-10

Classic Robin Williams was an attempt to restore the Robin Williams brand, after the disastrous New Robin Williams ad campaign failed to capture even a fraction of the same comedy markets as the original formula.

Also this movie was mule shit.

Jack Dalton - 2013-09-10

I would have posted the whole movie if I could...every scene is awful and manipulative.

And you would never guess how it ends: a trial scene where Patch defends his heroic view of the world in front of a bunch of evil doctors.

BHWW - 2013-09-10

and who can forget the moment when what are supposed to be a bunch of sickly child cancer patients troop in wearing clown noses to show their support for Dr. Wacky.

I'm reminded of Seanbaby's Internet Film Laser Squad's reactions to the similarly odious Good Morning Vietnam being an entry in the AFI's list of the 100 best comedies.

"Robin Williams tells jokes that clearly aren't funny and then they cut to the other actors laughing uproariously at them. And then at the end, the sad clown cries. Fuck you Robin Williams."

giygusattack - 2013-09-10

"The front of the box is proud that Time magazine called (Good Morning Vietnam) "...the best military comedy since 'M*A*S*H'..." Way to go, but being the funniest war movie is a lot like being the best looking child molestor. You only won because no one else entered the damn contest, and it probably shouldn't have been held in the first place."

Jet Bin Fever - 2013-09-10

I think the worst part (even worse than the performances) is the whimsical film music that runs through the whole thing. I work in medicine, and I hate this film too.

Quad9Damage - 2013-09-10

Does the whimsical film music run through the "I was molested" scene or the murder scene?

Quad9Damage - 2013-09-10

I never saw this movie. I just watched Doug Walker's review. This is what I know based on that 20+ minutes (Spoilers, like anyone gives a shit):

- The filmmakers turned the Patch Adams character into an ass clown who gets in trouble for practicing medicine without a license. The real Patch Adams was a licensed physician.

- The real Patch Adams hates this movie.

- The "humor as medicine" is taken WAY overboard, to the point where in one scene Patch Adams dresses like the world's hammiest giant insect and bursts into a dying child's hospital room.

- Monica Potter's character is a victim of multiple counts of childhood molestation and/or incest. The way she delivers the revelation to Robin Williams is in one of the most insincere and mishandled ways I've ever seen. She is later murdered by a psycho she is treating. In real life the murdered friend was actually a male and the filmmakers made his character a woman to give Patch Adams a love interest...and whatever the fuck else they were trying to do.

- This is every pretentious 90's Robin Williams vehicle ever.

themilkshark - 2013-09-10

Awesome, the love interest was formerly molested and ends up murdered before the movie ends. Oh, but there are clown bits peppered around all of that?

Fuck this fucking movie.

Quad9Damage - 2013-09-10

This is the abominable line (pulled from a transcript.):

"Patch...my entire life...men have been...attracted to me. My entire life. When I was a little girl...I would look out my bedroom window at the caterpillars. I envied them so much. No matter what they were before...no matter...what happened to them...they could just hide away, you know...and turn into these beautiful creatures that could fly away...completely untouched. I hated men so much. I wanted nothing to do with them. Then I met you."

Later, after she's murdered, Patch stands on a cliff and contemplates suicide but a beautiful butterfly lands on him and convinces him to live.

Fuck this movie.

Jet Bin Fever - 2013-09-10

You're right, I probably should've 5 starred this for evil. I guess I remembered it more as banal than evil though. Wow, truly terrible stuff.

Quad9Damage - 2013-09-10

I suppose I should point out that the preload image is probably not safe for work. But from what I gather this entire movie is not safe for life.

Caminante Nocturno - 2013-09-10

Everyone I've met who liked this movie and movies like it were awful, horrible people.

Every single one of them.

The Mothership - 2015-07-18
