I used to like this dub when I was younger. Now, I realize whoever hired voices at Streamline Pictures likely just watched Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and went from there.

Probably because when it came out over here, it was some folks' only exposure to anime. They'd only watch this and/or Dragonball Z and then talk about how they were "really into anime".

I think the original dub had much better writing, which is why it has some staying power with the better voiced second dub.

That's true. Back then, a lot of less-than-stellar anime got a lot more attention than they would have otherwise deserved because there was very little to choose from.

Pure eye candy. The animation quality was above and beyond what most any movie (that wasn't Disney-made) achieved prior to 88. It also helped they had pretty much every decent anime studio in Japan working on the movie.

Also, because of how many corners most Japanese animation companies cut during these periods, it took a while for them to catch up.

Structural improvements that are needed are one thing, but building things just to have a party is another.

Montreal went over budget so bad they ended up spending 1.6 billion dollars and didn't have it fully paid off until thirty years later.

On a local level, sure, it may be a racket. But all those billions go somewhere!
