The "huhmn uhh hmmmnnm uhm wha" quality of dubs.

Caminante Nocturno - 2013-09-10

Let's face it, the Olympics have never been this interesting and never will be.

Jet Bin Fever - 2013-09-10

haha. I hope that article is fake. Please tell me it's bullshit.

SolRo - 2013-09-10

it is. LoL players are full of themselves more than any other fan base.

also it would make the Olympics more boring, not less.

Nikon - 2013-09-10

There's no mention of LoL as an Olympic sport outside of that article, but LoL has apparently been recognized as a sport by the U.S. government:
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-07-13-league-of-legends -deemed-a-professional-sport-by-the-us-government

Professional League of Legends players can now get working visas in the US for their contribution to this emerging sport.

"The United States government recognises League of Legends pro players as professional athletes and award[s] visas to essentially work in the United States under that title," said developer Riot Games' eSports manager Nick Allen in an interview with Gamespot. "This is groundbreaking for eSports."

Caminante Nocturno - 2013-09-10

Hey, it's too bad whining about League of Legends isn't a sport, too, or a lot of you would have your faces on a Wheaties box right about now!

SolRo - 2013-09-10

I don't care about LoL, the dregs that play it are another matter.

Caminante Nocturno - 2013-09-10

That's a very important distinction and I can't even begin to imagine how important it is for you to make it.

EvilHomer - 2013-09-10

Instead of rebuilding the city, he made us spend the WHOLE surplus on that Olympic monstrosity!

Did he REALLY think the Olympic Games would gratify the people? Doesn't he remember that the Roman Emperors tried the same ploy?!

I TOLD YOU A THOUSAND TIMES THAT WE SHOULD HAVE SPENT THAT MONEY ON A FREEWAY SYSTEM

Kid Fenris - 2013-09-10

THAT'S BLASPHEMY, YOU OLD GOAT

EvilHomer - 2013-09-10

Whaddidhe say?

Who do you think you're kidding here, Colonel? We're not fools!

Caminante Nocturno - 2013-09-10

(Shoots dog in front of terrified toddler)

Hooker - 2013-09-10

Never understood why people single this out as a great, not-at-all-horseshit-like-the-rest-of-it anime.

chumbucket - 2013-09-10

It's violently cool but yeah this dub sucks ass.

StanleyPain - 2013-09-10

If you are seriously incapable of seeing why Akira is better than, say, Naruto or Bleach or Ranma 1/2 or some shit than you are extraordinarily dense to the point of being insufferable.

Gmork - 2013-09-10

What sucks worse than this awful dub is Hooker's taste in [______]

sosage - 2013-09-10

They could have just released the opening bike scene as a short and it still would be the 90's king of anime island.

Seven Arts/H8 Red - 2013-09-10

I used to like this dub when I was younger. Now, I realize whoever hired voices at Streamline Pictures likely just watched Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and went from there.

Nikon - 2013-09-10

Probably because when it came out over here, it was some folks' only exposure to anime. They'd only watch this and/or Dragonball Z and then talk about how they were "really into anime".

SolRo - 2013-09-10

I think the original dub had much better writing, which is why it has some staying power with the better voiced second dub.

Nominal - 2013-09-10

I guess it was mindblowing for the time and people had less choices outside of Japan.

Caminante Nocturno - 2013-09-10

That's true. Back then, a lot of less-than-stellar anime got a lot more attention than they would have otherwise deserved because there was very little to choose from.

roofle - 2013-09-11

Pure eye candy. The animation quality was above and beyond what most any movie (that wasn't Disney-made) achieved prior to 88. It also helped they had pretty much every decent anime studio in Japan working on the movie.

Also, because of how many corners most Japanese animation companies cut during these periods, it took a while for them to catch up.

namtar - 2013-09-10

The Olympics are sort of a racket. Cities spend billions of dollars making improvements and building facilities, but the economic returns just aren't there.

SolRo - 2013-09-10

what a great racket, tricking cities into making structural improvements.

vs.

giving tax cuts to keep companies from moving out of state, and they do anyhow.

building another new stadium to keep sports team XYZ from moving (or make them not suck) they still do (they still suck)

giving billions in writeoffs to gas companies so they make more gas to lower prices, prices still go up.

namtar - 2013-09-10

Yes, SolRo, because I said they shouldn't do one thing means that I definitely think they should do the things you mentioned. That's totally what I meant.

Structural improvements that are needed are one thing, but building things just to have a party is another.

Montreal went over budget so bad they ended up spending 1.6 billion dollars and didn't have it fully paid off until thirty years later.

EvilHomer - 2013-09-10

On a local level, sure, it may be a racket. But all those billions go somewhere!

Don't be selfish, Olympic cities. Think of the Games as a fun way to redistribute the wealth!
