I think this is really hyped up to call such a thing dangerous. It's in really poor taste, but I doubt anyone is driven to rape by stupid spelling chants.

Kabbage - 2013-09-12

I can see how it might give stupid people the impression that rape maybe isn't THAT bad of a thing, if people are allowed to openly chant about it. And if the frosh evidently widely holds this kind of opinion.

It's not really a decent parallel, but if you were on the fence about doing drugs, and then heard this writhing mass of your peers chant that they're fine, despite what the university line is, you'd be like "well, maybe this is one of those things that society makes a big song and dance about, but doesn't REALLY matter."

Also it's worth noting that while Nova Scotia is absolutely, impossibly gorgeous, and camping there is the greatest, there are a lot of places in that province where it's just open backwoods hickery. It's a lot like a deep south state, in some ways, where there are a few really populous cities, then huuuuge swaths of barely anything.

So if there were more rapists we wouldn't still be locked in the war on drugs?

Udderdude - 2013-09-12

They're totally hyped up about going to jail.

Spaceman Africa - 2013-09-12

Nova Scotia is a big shithole despite it's beauty. It's probably the only place in Canada where a black person has had a flaming cross put on their lawn. It's the place all the white supremacists say is the "last bastion of whiteness" in Canada.

There are an amazing number of people that don't think rape is really all that bad. This contributes to that.

Old_Zircon - 2013-09-12

The rest of Canada is too busy shitting all over the native tribes to be racist against black people.

Some facts: Rape/sexual assaults in the US (against men and women combined) have fluctuated between a high of 1.2 and a low of .5 rapes/sexual assaults per 1000 people from 2000-2011.

Men represent less than half the US population, but are majority of victims of violent crimes, ~18.4 per 1000 vs ~15.2 per 1000 for women.

However, women, if they are victims of a violent crime, the likelihood that the crime is rape/sexual assault is much higher than for men. Between 2000 and 2009 the average total number of rapes/sexual assaults on men was mid 18,000 in the population, while closer to 100,000 for women.

I pulled these from Bureau of Justice Statistics PDFs:

http://www.bjs.gov/content/pub/pdf/cv11.pdf

Correction: not 15.2 per 1000 for women, but 15.8 per 1000 for women.

I did this from memory, my numbers are off a bit, but not significantly. See table 7 in cv09.pdf

19,280 rapes/sexual assaults on men in 2009
106,100 rapes/sexual assaults on women in 2009
