Sounds like things were pretty nuts in Gilbertown, these past few years. It's an old coal mining town, and evidently pretty remote. They've had issues with Kessler in the past, too:

Also pretty insane is the fact that he was actually in the process of forming his own militia, calling it, I shit you not, the Constitution Security Force:

Evidently some of these jags were standing outside of the courtroom, when they took away his job.

I looked into it a bit more, and he actually organized a march on D.C. earlier this year, calling for "the third american revolution," the second being the Civil War:

Okay... I started listening to Kessler's radio rant that he had on his website:

http://www.chiefkessler.com/index.php/shows/shows

After saying that there are shadowy government forces that murder people in the town, and then dump their bodies in the coal mines, he started taking callers.

Skip to 14:00, where the caller starts fairly generally about how the goverment is threatening, then goes all-in on his belief that the gunman at the Naval Command was in fact rebelling against government mind control techniques. Kessler proceeds to kind of agree with him.

If only threatening to overthrow the government were illegal in some form.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2013-09-23

Given the right wing's habit of projecting what it wants to do onto the motives of those they hold up as enemies or strawmen, I'd have someone check out those coal mines before letting him move out of the state.

I have to ask, how did he get to be police chief? Seriously. Did he get elected on this kind of platform? Was he appointed by the city council during one of his more lucid (and possibly medicated) moments when he seemed semi sane? Or did he just declare himself head of police one day? I really want to know. Especially after reading this in the one article:

"In 2011, while off duty, the police chief (Mark Kessler) fired his weapon during a bar brawl, shooting himself in the hand by mistake."

After watching this video, I thought 'yes this is someone who's shot himself and never learned anything from it.'

Gilberton, PA is a town of about 800 people, 20% of whom are senior citizens. I doubt he faced tough opposition.

Is that like, an official police Under Armour baseball cap?

RocketBlender - 2013-09-23

When you're out on patrol, it's important to keep your head properly underarmored.

So this guy doesn't understand that our UN representative can sign any number of treaties in the World, but unless our Congress approves it and the President signs it into law, it is not binding to our government in any way, does he?

SolRo - 2013-09-23

Pretty sure the US UN rep. doesn't fart without making sure the whitehouse and congress approve first.

Herr Matthias - 2013-09-23

James Carville was wrong. Alabama is far classier than rural Pennsylvania.

gravelstudios - 2013-09-24

Rural Pa is one of the most bass ackwards parts of the U.S.A.

yogarfield - 2013-09-24

having just moved from alabama to the northwest, i can assure you that these types extend rather consistently all the way to the pacific.

It's nice to know he doesn't understand how the first amendment, copyright, and the internet works, either.

Remember how Barney Fife was still a relatively decent guy, despite his cowardice, vindictiveness and eagerness to rush to violence?

That archetype is gone, as is the kindly sheriff who WOULD take his one bullet away.

hammsangwich - 2013-09-24

I'm pretty sure this guy forwards TONS of emails to my uncle that start with "I can't verify any of this, BUT IT MAKES YA THINK, DON'T IT?"

Jet Bin Fever - 2013-09-25

I bet he would make a great congressman.
