Every attempt i made to get into Gundam i was met with a strong build wall i couldn pass. Gundam Wing was a bore, and had a boy band of obnoxious dbags as characters. I tried to get into other gundams but the mythology of the show is so thick, they throw you right into the middle of it expecting you to know everything about the 30 something years of history of the franchise.

So, where should i start then?

G Gundam is objectively the best Gundam series.

While I am a avid fan of it, it's exactly like Battletech. A title that has so much dense history in the books that unless you started when it first came out you are completely lost.

As for the animation, if that is hand drawn that is damn good.

Go OG Gundam. They separate the series by timeline, the original universe is called UC or Universal Century. As long as you stick with that timeline, you'll only be let down if you get attached to certain characters. The rest of the stuff, like Gundam Wing, Gundam Age, and G Gundam are all pick your poisons. Wing was designed to appeal to girls so you had a bishi boy cast, G Gundam was designed to create a super robot Gundam series (as Gundam is a "real" robot series), Age is a modern retelling of the original three series. Most of them will have references to UC, but you don't have to know every single series just to jump into one...except for the most of UC stuff, but once you start watching it won't feel like 3 months of your life have been stolen.

I would say the compilation movie trilogy is a good place to start. It's a condensed version of the original TV series with some new animation and a lot of the hideous toy company-mandated designs removed and replaced with better ones.

Gundam 0080 is well-regarded as one of the best Universal Century OVAs, but if you're looking for a lot of giant robots fighting, you'll probably be a bit disappointed, as it focuses more on the characters. What action there is, though, is very well-done.

Mobile Suit Gundam 0083 Stardust Memory

If you want something good but very different, check out 0080

I like the idea behind Gundam, but most of the series let me down. One reason is Yoshiyuki Tomino, the creator of Gundam and the director of many of the older shows. His grasp of dialogue, pacing, and general storytelling is terrible. He's the Japanese George Lucas, and that's not a compliment.

I'm also put off by the way most Gundam series follow the same cliches. There's a kid who stumbles across a super-powered robot. There's a masked guy working for the enemy while pursuing his own agenda. There's a woman who dies to show us that War Is Bad.

I do like Gundam 0080, which is a space-robot version of coming-of-age films like Winter in Wartime and Hope and Glory. You'll have to put up with a somewhat shrieky main character for the first half, but it's well worth it.

G Gundam is stupid fun, and 08th MS Team has a decent episode of two despite all of its cliches. Unicorn is well-made, but it also follows the Gundam blueprint.

But if you want to know what the whole Gundam thing is about in terms of pop-culture staples and giant statues and guys going into space dressed like Char? Then yeah, the original movie trilogy is the place to start.

0083 features none of that.

Main character is an adult, already a soldier and there are no masked badguys.

That and it's loaded with "woe is us" post-WW2 Japanese self-pity.

I wouldn't recommend 0083 to a newcomer, as good as the animation and action is, it doesn't make a lot of sense without context.
