Oh it's true, it's an awful noise. Far worse in person when they're doing it as loud as they can.

Had two bunnies. They like to establish dominance by digging their claws and teeth into one another and humping. It can cause blood and torn fur, and the sounds of the hissing and screams are nightmarish. When female bunnies start going through puberty, before they're fixed, it's horrible what they get up to.

First time I heard it, I'm sitting on the porch with some friends. There's his horrible, horrible scream, and then a few minutes later my cat nonchalantly walked over, sat down near us, and began cleaning his paws.

Look to your roadside power lines & most high tree branches.

The Hawks in my area have quite a roadside buffet.

We once had a hawk in our front yard that had nailed a pigeon, turning the surrounding snow into a bloody mess. I wish I'd known what the hawk sound/action was for "please murder more of them and take as many squirrels as you can while you're at it."

I love bunnies but they are the world's food supply for good reason.
A female rabbit reproduces so much that the hormones that have to be pumped through their tiny little bodies end up killing them from cancer before the age of 3. When fixed they can live longer than twice that age and die pretty peacefully.

Nature is horrible.

Though rabbit is lacking in certain vitamins and minerals, so you (a person, dunno about other predators) can't survive on rabbit alone. You'd eventually "starve" for lack of other needs in your diet.

I figure it's a trade-off for being able to make mittens out of the critters.

Rabbit starvation is basically a no-carb all-protein diet, so you starve faster than if you didn't eat at all.

Rabbit starvation is only the case if you just eat the lean meat, and not the organs, eyes, brain, bone marrow, etc. I don't think that is a problem for hawks.
