We sell you!!! The Guns!

freedoom - 2013-10-06

Criminals still get a hold of guns even if it's illegal for law abiding citizens to own them. organized crime also includes gun runners and access to gun runners. outlawing guns will just create a larger black market for guns just like outlawing drugs created a large black market for drugs. Crime finds a way.

Crazies who shoot up schools and offices will just use something other than a gun to wreak havoc if they can't find a gun. for example on the same day as the sandy hook shooting a man in china stabbed 23 children at a school. they don't have access to guns they will find something else to use which is why england has some weird 'knife control' laws and tried to ban kitchen knives with a point a while back. controlling access to weapons does not prevent violence. Humans are violent by nature, if you take away one tool we will replace it with another. take away all tools and we will use our fists.

ashtar. - 2013-10-06

Knife control is perfectly reasonable. If you're within 21 feet, a knife is more deadly than a gun.

Love & Vomit - 2013-10-06

Of the 22 children injured in the stabbing, seven were hospitalized and none were killed. Compare that to the 26 people murdered at Sandy Hook Elementary.

Vaidency - 2013-10-06

So basically there's no point in having laws because criminals will break them anyway, so we may as well just replace the entire legal system with anarchy and vigilantism.

baleen - 2013-10-06

About 150,000 guns were stolen from law abiding citizens in the USA last year.

Criminals love when people have guns.

Ever carried a concealed gun around?
Do an experiment..

1. Walk around in a public place with a sandwich in your bag and note how that makes you feel, paying particular attention to the thoughts that go through your head when you see somebody suspicious or threatening, then go home.

2. Replace the sandwich with a kitchen knife, then return to the same public place, a Starbucks or library or whatever. Note how that makes you feel.

3. Return home, and replace the kitchen knife with a semiautomatic pistol. Repeat the previous steps.

Note varying levels of "paranoia," "empowerment," "thoughts of vengeance," and the kinds of things that cross your mind.

Nominal - 2013-10-06

If knives are just as deadly as guns, why don't you try stopping crime with your batarang?

Hooker - 2013-10-06

Along the line of thinking, shouldn't we also outlaw money, jewelry, and other valuables?

It's weird that you-can't-have-something is the liberal position on an issue.

memedumpster - 2013-10-06

Thank you, completely insane removed from actual reality person, for finally putting to rest the personal war in my mind as to why Cylons carried swords when they had blasters.

spikestoyiu - 2013-10-06

Hey I'm on the Internet. I can say whatever I want with zero sources ever and state it all as fact.

spikestoyiu - 2013-10-06

Also I'm amazed that people are still citing the Chinese school attack (the one where nobody died) when trying to sell you on guns.

Nominal - 2013-10-06

If we're going to ban (object with zero utility other than amplifying the deadly threat of a single person), we might as well ban (object with every day utility that can conceivable be used as a weapon more dangerous than a fist) too!

Stolen Guns: There's millions of them.
http://news.nd.edu/news/29684-holding-a-gun-makes-you-think-ot hers-are-too-new-research-shows/

There is a wide margin across various studies I've seen on how criminals use the guns that are stolen in crimes. In one prison survey only 5% of stolen guns were used by their thieves, but it's not hard to imagine that this could be low balling it.

There are many studies establishing that it is far more likely you will be killed by the gun in your house than you will by an intruder, in one study, you are actually TWELVE TIMES more likely to be killed by the gun you own than by stranger breaking into your home.

As I've said before, I don't care if you like to play with your little guns. Many of my friends and family enjoy firearms for both recreational shooting and hunting. Go for it. It's fun to hear the bang sound and the bullet goes into the thing and it goes boom and its powerful like being a warrior mage. Just don't gussy it up with dubious statistics proclaiming that it lowers crime, that it makes you safer, that it somehow a patriotic deed to possess weapons built to kill people, or make ludicrous statements that messed up people with guns are as deadly as messed up people with knives.

Before anybody says it, as I've read enough of these threads to know that they repeat themselves infinitely...

"What about cars? Those are weapons too! Should we not allow people to have cars?" Well actually we already have a lot of laws preventing bad people from driving and regulating their use of cars but lack the same kinds of oversight for firearms, so there's that. Also, guns are expressly made to exterminate life, cars have multiple purposes and their designers go to great lengths to insure that their users don't die.

bongoprophet - 2013-10-06

from any sane point of view America has too easy access and too many damn guns, fuck your gun culture, fuck people who claim than guns = freedom, and fuck you, freedoom.

Hooker - 2013-10-06

What everyday utility does a pearl necklace have?

Pillager - 2013-10-06

@ Baleen, I've lugged my hidden pistol around in public on numerous occasions. Never have I wanted to reenact the E1M1: Hangar level from Doom. Not every gun owner is George Zimmerman.

ashtar. - 2013-10-06

Yes, outlaw guns. Advantage: knife guy.

SweaterCollection - 2013-10-06

Who wants to outlaw guns?

All I want is for conservatives to admit that, like cigarettes, guns kill lots of people. It's just a price that they're willing to pay.

freedoom - 2013-10-06

It's better to have it and not need it then to not have it at all. one person with a gun could have stopped any number of these mass shootings just like any one person with a gun can start one.

baleen, situational awareness is better than burring your head in the sand.

baleen - 2013-10-06

Some time ago Kyle Huff walked into the apartment of a friend of mine and murdered 7 people. I used to be one of those kids, hanging out with that group of people into the late hours, smoking weed, watching movies. They were innocent and young, they didn't have guns in the hands when they were having conversations on their sofas. This event is now known as the Capitol Hill Massacre.

If somebody wants to shoot you, they will shoot you.
The odds are that you will be dead before you can determine that it's ok to shoot someone else dead.
On top of that, the legal system is seldom forgiving of gun deaths, since almost all cases of "self defense" are cases where it was possible to evade the conflict, where there was some form of escalation involved. I can provide citation for this if you want.

Pillager, I'm sure you have a lot of self-control and you're a good person. As I said, I don't care if you guys have guns, I just think the reasons you have them are mostly delusional.

"one person with a gun could have stopped any number of these mass shootings just like any one person with a gun can start one." Really, Mr. Bronson? Please tell me how. I haven't seen Deathwish in a long time so I need to be reminded.
You're wrong and you live in a fantasy world.

freedoom - 2013-10-06

Why dont you move to a country that doesn't have our second ammendment.

Cockmaster Flash - 2013-10-06

How about you move to a country where you can own all the guns you want without any restrictions?

I hear Syria's lovely this time of year.

Cockmaster Flash - 2013-10-06

Or perhaps Afghanistan is more to your liking. And oceanfront property in Somalia is going pretty cheap.

Love & Vomit - 2013-10-06

Compare the number of potential mass shootings that were prevented by armed individuals to the number of people shot and killed in arguments that escalated into violence. The good that armed civilians can do is dwarfed by the number of needless killings perpetuated by armed civilians.

baleen - 2013-10-06

Freedoom, I am going to rape your butthole.

freedoom - 2013-10-06

cockmaster, i'm pretty sure i would do well as subsaharan african warlord.

balee, it's not rape if i consent.

baleen - 2013-10-06

Just to tie this thing together.

Basically, you can lead a horticulture, but you can't make him think.

freedoom - 2013-10-06

You say that as if i could read.

The Mothership - 2013-10-07

Pillager, I'm amazed that you leave the house, much less own a gun.

Just kidding, but seriously dude, I love ya, but damn, that's a surprise.

Gmork - 2013-10-08

Then outlaw cars too, you fucking imbeciles.

Logical fallacies are reaching the universe's tolerance. Your story is very sad baleen, but it's also sad how you didn't learn anything from that experience other than some primal, caveman-esque "GUNS ARE BAD" mentality.

Cars are bad too, in fact, they're statistically much worse. Cars are the real evil, hurf durf. I say hurf durf because we both fucking know you assholes all love cars too much to ever see them in the EXACT SAME LIGHT as any other tool that can be misused to cause harm to.

Gmork - 2013-10-08

*lose the "to" at the end. I was going to say humans but there's plenty of dead animals who'd like to get a word in edgewise

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2013-10-08

Gmork, at least try to use a comparative that isn't completely moronic.

"Cars are bad too, in fact, they're statistically much worse."

More people use cars every day than use guns. Of COURSE more people are going to die in ways that involve cars. Another difference is that to drive a car you need to actually take a written and skills test, get a license, insure the car, and if your car is stolen, there are numerous ways to ID it if it or parts of it turn up again. If you go to buy a used car, you can look up the vehicle's history and do so using computers. Not so with guns, thanks to the NRA. Written records are all that are allowed, they can't be computerized by law, and those keeping these records often deface them before sending them off to the government as required, where they sit in underfunded warehouses, waiting for overworked and understaffed government employees to scan them into microfilm.

Maybe for your next trick, you can say that hospitals are awful places to go for medical attention because so many people die there?

Spaceman Africa - 2013-10-08

I was wondering how long Gmork would take to respond. And he starts off straight with the "muhh guns are just as dangerous as cars" leap in logic.

ashtar. - 2013-10-06

Uh. Just something that has been bothering me for a while. Generally speaking, break-ins occur when you're not home. Like, during the day or when you're on vacation. Who would break into a house with people in it?

augias - 2013-10-06

Cat people would.

Cockmaster Flash - 2013-10-06

The Negroes.

baleen - 2013-10-06

7% of burglaries involve violence of some kind (source: USDOJ).
Almost all burglaries occur when you're not home, which is why they're able to STEAL SO MANY FUCKING GUNS.

Gmork - 2013-10-08

So you're saying disarm people so that only criminals and state/government agencies have guns. Gotcha. How smart of you, that will stop crime and gun violence forever. Bravo.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2013-10-08

And gun ownership has ended crime forever, with every attempted shooting, burglary, or drive-by ended by a super-patriot toting an arsenal, and its only those people who can keep the better-trained, better-equipped, and better-organized military and police forces from taking over the nation.

See? Others can play this game, too.

Spaceman Africa - 2013-10-08

If the gubmint have all the guns I won't be able to resist their tyrannical regime in my libertarian fever dream.

Cherry Pop Culture - 2013-10-08

The sooner we admit we are a country filled with weapon-toting psychos, the happier we will be. Maybe if we had better mental health care, guns wouldn't frighten fellow citizens so much. The people I know who are all about the second amendment of the Constitution are also in dire need of services.

Shoebox Joe - 2013-10-11

I don't think it's just better mental health care. Doctors simply lobbing out a prescription and then assuming the patient will go to a therapist is a pretty damn big red flag on how ignorant people are of mental and emotional states. Even worse is that they don't even ask IF you want to go through with medication. There is an immense lack of mental health awareness. I've only seen one campaign centered around it, but it was by a baker making "depression cakes."

On a personal note, I also believe there is an even bigger lack of how to even use the mental health system.

Our schools are even worse. Everyone who isn't in a second "support" class in school is considered doing A-ok, but everyone in those special ed classes are considered lost and low functioning. It doesn't matter if there's emotional trauma in conjunction with their disability. They're retards. But kids who are doing A-ok obviously have no disorders, disabilities or cognitive problems. They're either dumb, bright or fucking retards.

If you ask me, today's society is a damn giant fucking mirror to how our education system even operates. Everyone poor has to be pitied, looked down on, ignored or considered unfortunate with out a consideration to any valid exposition. All it takes is being or the feeling of being conned and you'll have no will or reason to even think about them. Just like how in High School it's either you have it or you don't.

The only thing we even have that even remotely resembles mental health awareness is sex ed. And even that is that either bullshit fear mongering or literally a session that could be learned from a pamphlet.

And a final note: I feel like shit that I never backed up Blue on this, but I just didn't feel ready or adequate to do so. We are not doing jack shit to help out our younger generations. I'm taking it on myself to write a graphic novel that may help kids, and people in general, to dig deep on their emotions and learn to find the base where it's naturally them and when it's something else. The fact that companies funding and hiring for T.V. shows are being pushed to censor with out any just cause all because of "the kids" with out any consideration for kids let alone an actual argument that would make sense (kids can be cruel would be one of those) is just down right nauseating. It doesn't matter if it's a company funding a show for their toyline, it's still the same, baseless knee jerk reaction that's set this society so far back that the concept of homosexuals marrying is still a giant, shocking, subversive concept well after the civil rights movement appeared to have done it's job. It's the same shit that allowed sex-fetish shit to get leaked into kids entertainment all due to "competent and/or affordable" writers and entertainers.
